Allegedly & heard from a third party.

Did the question in the topic get answered?

Discuss.

I think so. 1) Communicate, 2) Don't post the accused contact info.

And 3) Communicate a bit more.

See who says I don't learn from my mistakes? :)

So you're saying this thread will not die until it has either run its course of 16 pages, or RayEthier deals a final, thread-killing post?

Well, I am the "other photographer" who has been the unfortunate subject of this thread. I'm working on a long version of my response, but I just wanted to do a quick post and ask everyone to please be patient while I do that. There's been a whole lot of stuff going on and it has been very distressing to me how this has gone.

Simms, coryboehne, GeneralE and BrennanOB in particular, you all seem fair and the tone of your posts has helped convince me to step in. I think things will change for everyone when some misunderstandings on both sides are cleared up and some more facts are on the table. At least one of you asked for my perspective so here I am.

Then I just hope to put this all to rest. I believe that punk_kaos has truly been dismayed by how this has "gone to the dogs" and he has sincerely apologized off this forum to me.

I'm a loyal and generous friend to many creative artists, performers and all around great people, and as you've so colorfully seen in previous posts, that loyalty comes back to me from them as well. I've asked them to please take it down a notch and let me speak. Please don't go after any of them or any of their websites or groups because of this. If you met any of them outside of this situation you wouldn't dream of doing so.

And I also want to specifically let kaos know what I thought of him, his equipment, and his working style as I saw him at the wedding. I think he might be surprised when I do.

AND... there must be a challenge in honor of the thread.

Lack of communication and misunderstandings are the basis of many classic sit-coms... Three's Company, anyone? Cue up the happy ending. Well, as happy as any ending can be without seeing Suzanne Somers' naked breasts.

My respect meter just went up four notches.. Can't wait to see the long response.

I figured someone might bring something like that up, but hoped enough time had passed. Honestly, I am referring back to the days of the TV show, timed to the beginning of my puberty and age of self-discovery.

Can you please promise me that you'll never talk about this in public again?

Now this is another small thing that buggers me... Was he really hired for candids? If so, I'm thinking that it must have been incredibly difficult to get "candids" hauling around that umbrella and flash kit...

Personally I would have opted (and, in a very similar situation over Christmas, did opt) for a fast medium tele lens (85mm f/1.8 in my case).. I actually ended up getting the better photos too, because the silly photographer was using a 530EX and had it pointed straight at the subjects instead of bouncing or diffusing the flash, which was not only casting harsh shadows, but was also blinding the poor subjects...

Just curious, not making any judgments here, but it sounds more like he was doing posed shots, not candids..

Why is this door locked? Are you in there self-discovering again?

It also seems to me that if the bride was inviting someone to take pictures, it might be a good idea for her to let the person she actually hired to do the job know about it a little more clearly than apparently was the case.

Another case of an uninvitedofficial photographer bad mouthing the hired help?

Again, your succinctness is amazing... (see: long version of this post...)

Or it could be your long-windedness blows. :P

Nah, we are both extended family. Neither of us was being paid, although she was the only one asked to shoot. In fact, the critical appraisal is that of the subjects not my own.. I was largely just playing with my 85 f/1.8, but the quality difference was very obvious, even to very "average" viewers... The biggest issue with my shots was the relatively high ISO I was shooting at.. (1600 mostly)

Although to be fair, do you really think it's ever a good idea to directly flash the subjects without diffusing or bouncing the light? Especially with a nice low ceiling?

And, as another critical point, I did not in any way interfere with her setup and posing, I just stood behind her and to her left and shot the same poses she was setting up..

Really, I'm quite proud of myself, as I managed to say NOTHING to her about photography, which is appropriate, but you don't even know how badly I wanted to ask her if she had considered bouncing the flash... Well, almost nothing, as she was asking my opinion about the 7D, and I told her she'd probably be better off upgrading her lenses and keeping her current body.. (She was shooting with a 28-135IS, a lens I own and know well, so well that in fact I almost never actually use it anymore...)

And, just to finish this thing off properly Simms, you might want to re-check your usage, it seems you might be working on an older model...

Bugger is a slang word used in the vernacular British English, Irish English, Australian English, Canadian English, New Zealand English, South African English, Indian English, and occasionally also in Malaysian English, Scots and (rarely) American English. It is derived from Anglo-Norman bougre, which has also given the term buggery, a term originally used to describe either anal intercourse by a man with a man or woman,[1] or sexual intercourse by either a man or a woman with an animal.[2] Today, the term is a general-purpose expletive, used to imply dissatisfaction, or used to describe someone or something whose behaviour is in some way displeasing, though in general Australian and New Zealand English the expletive force has largely disappeared; the word there now has a 'catch-all', almost humorous, 'Jeez' quality.

A good time to update the contract template and add section regarding exclusivity.

When I was first informed that he would be there, I was told that he was 'A photographer type, And would have his camera with him to shoot some photos of guests'

In my mind I had him pegged as a friend who happened to own an SLR and would be doing like most other guests do. I was not at all expecting another pro photographer to be there doing more than just 'snapping a few shots of guests'.

Something to add to my photographer dictionary I guess, the sometimes "Photographer type" actually really means just that.

why do i feel like we have all been the butt of a big practical joke by a group of performing pirates?

But the way, what the hell are performing pirates?

Just when I felt that the lowest point of this thread was Slippy talking about his adolescent voyage of discovery, it now surely cant get any worse (with some help from my completely out of context snipping)

No idea, but I've heard you can rent two of those, plus a midget and a donkey in Mexico for around forty bucks...
