Any chance we can see the shots you managed to get when he was bothering you?

Day 1: Adding white vignette's to give your shoot that cheesy 80's feel
Day 2: Superimposing the couple's image on a champagne glass
Day 3: Graduation

You had me at Day 2.

This is a shot of what he was running around with that my second shooter took though, to give you an idea.

This fixes that if you shoot from a distance.

And he got the shots with a box over his head? - Was he showing off?
01/03/2011 06:36:23 PM · #82
i'm really wishing i could have been there, just to have seen this whole thing go down. i hate that it happened to you, pk, but from a spectator's viewpoint, it must have been an absolute riot.

Actually, he usually had her hold it, and he stepped away and shot the photo... Though I have no idea if any of his shots turned out...

Actually it looks like he has a Pocket Wizard ETTL setup there, a TT1 and a TT5 - quite good gear to be honest - I have used this setup myself and it works a treat. I used it for this shot

and any Londoner will tell you this isnt the easiest place in the world to get a portrait shot like this - but the background is soooo worth it.. Dont knock a photographer for his gear as he may just be able to use it very well indeed!

Yep, thats exactly what he's got. His gear was all great stuff, his body was either a 5D or 7D and most of his glass was L series stuff. That was part of what he was sneering at. My body is a 400D with a seriously hacked firmware that gives it most of the 40D's features, and mostly Sigma or older canon glass. My triggers are all Yongnuo or cable, so OBVIOUSLY I can't shoot anything worth keeping... ;)

Its a vintage movie theater in Portland off of Stark St, which made the shoot interesting because everything is either painted to absorb light or massively reflective.

oh i thought maybe it was up here in Seattle since thats where he was out of. My wife and I got married at a place in downtown Sea. that was absolutley the BOMB for backdrops. I could show you but the photog was using medium format film (1999) although I guess i could scan some. She did beautiful work, they look awesome on our wall.

Hey guys, I was just contacted by the photographer in question, who has apparently been harassed due to this thread.

I'd like to publicly apologize to him for that as that was never my intention. I had PROFESSIONAL differences that are unrelated to this man's skills.
Please refrain from bashing or harassing him, whatever our differences harassment is unprofessional and childish.

Would a moderator please delete this thread.

I am disgusted. I was at that wedding. I watched your work. At no time were you encumbered by that other photographer. If you are that incompetent, you shouldn't take the gig. I also happen to know the guy and your statements about him are totally false. He doesn't talk like that. He certainly wouldn't interfere with another photographer.....he took pictures at my wedding two months ago...he was in no way a distraction, problem, or anything but helpful to the hired photographer.
You use the term, "Professional", yet I find your lying about a fellow enthusiast far from professional.
The gentleman you slandered is a totally professional photographer who has done some fantastic work for many people. I have known him for many years. Your lies about his behavior disgust me.

I will make one clarification to my comments, apparently he had been invited to shoot as he did.
I repeat that I was not meaning to attack him, but the comments that were made to my crew and myself were not helpful at all and I felt them condescending and rude at times.

Also note that I have never stated anything negative about his work, my only frusturation was
In the actions at the time. Imagine how you would feel if another photographer showed up at your job and began making suggestions about how to do things? Its not an excuse for where this thread has gone but I hope it provides some context for my feelings.

Ive already apologized for any damage that the person in question may have received, that was not my intention. I felt intruded on and inhibited because another professional photographer showed up and made actions that in my mind made me feel like he had no respect for my position or job and inhibited my work. Due to the fact he was invited to shoot, some of his actions make much more sense than they did at the time in that context.

I also deeply regret that this thread has devolved as it has and have already requested that it be removed.

I can't believe you started this post. How sad that you feel the need to post such awful words about anyone, especially someone who was trying to help a bride and groom by providing extra photographs.

I know the bride. She told me that although she was excited about your work, you told her you'd never photographed a wedding before. The other photographer was a guest of the MoH and volunteered to take extra photos. The bride was thrilled.

I was also at the wedding. I didn't see him "steal" your subjects. As a matter of fact, as soon as you mentioned to him that his flash was having an effect on your work, I saw him take subjects into the lobby - FAR from you - so that he wouldn't interfere. At all times, he appeared polite to the guests, to the bride and groom and to you and your staff.

You're a talented photographer who shouldn't need to malign others to make his work look better. To continue to respond after your the intial post was very rude and unprofessional.

I wonder if the MoH had something in mind for the shots such as a present to the bride. That would put the boyfriend in a tough position of having to get the shots or else. I find that people who are being rude or inconsiderate are often under pressures that aren't apparent to other people.

Yup...just about what I figured...

One sided threads never tell the whole story.

What you start...you deserve.
As for Byron saying something to your help. I strongly suggest you review things with your assistant. Byron doesn't say or do those things. I'd say more, but your lack of professionalism just makes me certain that I will suggest to any and all people that look for a photographer don't hire a person whose website belays the honorable term "piratology". As a pirate, I find your use of it after causing a gentleman such as Byron Dazey pain. You, sir, are not worthy of using the term "pirate" in any form.

Actually I told the bride that I had shot a couple, but don't do it often.
He was very much in the way when I was trying to shoot shots of the bride and groom in front of the marquee and was constantly changing their poses before I could hit my shutter.

He also was in the background of many shots due to his very large umbrella.

AGAIN, please note that I wasn't aware at the time that he had been invited, that makes some of his actions far more reasonable.

But as you said, it wasn't professional of me to post things that lead back to him directly. I've already apologized here and to him directly, and have invited him to discuss it with me directly if he feels the need to.

I would just like to point out that pirate is not really an honorable term. Quite the opposite really.
