I'm going to Ottawa the weekend of January 29th. I wonder will it be cold enough then to skate on the canal?

It *should* be, and you can of course always rent skates so you needn't bring any. But with the winters having been fairly mild as of late, who knows?

What the hell are beavertails anyway?

Deep-fried pastries that are stretched out a bit before being plonked in the fryer so they don't take long to cook. Topped with any number of ingredients. My fave is topped with cinnamon sugar. Best eaten hot from the fryer...ahhh....can also get them with jam, lemon, other yummy stuff. I believe they are basically the same thing as a similar-sounding treat, 'elephant ears'.

The cinnamon sugar ones are the best!

Ahhh, right. Elephant ears sounds familiar. But I don't eat those either, as I'm healthy, and head straight for the salt lick and beer stand.

To be honest, I just got married to a girl from Illinois, and we'll likely move back that way within a few years, and I'm taking notes on nice places to live. Ottawa is now on the radar. (If the Mounties let us in.)

If you need someone to show you around let us know...I am certain that there are a few of us that could show you the area.

Thanks! I've been to Ottawa many times and I know the area pretty well. Plus it's just for my partner's company's post-Christmas party & we won't have much time to do anything other than that and visit a few friends.

Ottawa is a great city, but now vastly much more expensive than when I grew up there. It's now got a populace of almost 1 million and some accompanying problems associated with a city that size. However the outlying country areas (like where Ray and I live) are much more affordable and generally pretty quiet.

PS I don't think you have to worry about the Mounties keeping you out - though that would be Ray's department more than mine. But if you or your wife can speak and write English and passing Quebecois French (aka 450-yr-old peasant French), you're probably a shoo-in :-)
