both my wife and daughter had been complaining about the cell phone batteries not charging completely and i was not looking forward to shelling out about $40 each for new batteries. i took my daughter's phone to the service center to have it checked out and they told me that i might want to get the contacts cleaned (and typically/expectedly, they weren't able to do that there).

so i went across the road to a RadioShack and asked them if they could help and they recommended their store-brand contact cleaner for $11. i cleaned all three of our phones and the charger; all three charged all the way up to four battery bars quicker and they've all been holding their charge longer. your mileage may vary...

note: i'm not naming the service provider because it could be any/every one of them ;-)

Good advice Skip , I use a bit of emery paper or an ordinary pencil rubber will do the job.

Cleaning the contacts occasionally is very good advice... especially since our 'phones live in very dusty, sometimes humid environments, that is to say, pockets.
When cleaning contacts what you *don't* want to do is use a strong abrasive. The contacts are plated with gold, and the gold is very thin, less than one tenth the thickness of a human hair. Removing it will cause the contacts to oxidize quickly, and you will have more and more trouble with the battery.
Contact cleaner and a swab is a good method. A pencil eraser works, but is fairly abrasive and will remove some gold. Use with care. Some of them also leave behind contamination. The "gold standard" for cleaning contacts is the Pink Pearl eraser. This is the eraser that many companies have used for decades to clean edge contacts on circuit cards.
