Can someone tell me how to resize an image for the web in PSP. I have version 9.

Thanks

Not sure about v9, I have 11 & 12. Here's how I do it in those, I expect 9 should be similar:

-Image menu
-Resize
-Under the pixel dimensions field, set your size. Make sure "lock aspect ratio" is checked. Set sharpening and sampling method as desired. (I use bicubic)
-After resize sharpen as needed.
-Go to "File-->save as" and if it is similar to what I have, you can find the JPEG optimizer as in my screenshot below. There should be something to adjust the compression, even if v9 does not have the same optimizer dialog. Adjust your compression to get the file to the desired size and then save.

Thanks Steve. I was part way there but I just couldn't seem to finish it.

Shift+S I think is the shortcut for the last several versions. For what it's worth...

Will Topaz adjust work with PSP? If so, how do you set it up?

Works just great. For me, anyway. I don't think Brian is much of a Topaz fan.

Hey Spiffy old boy!! Since you seem to be the PSP expert, I have another question concerning the picture below.

All I did with this is rotate the image x degrees and the white background was automatically created. How can I change that white background to black?
12/28/2010 11:41:18 AM · #9
Change your background color first: Bring up the Materials palette if it's not there already. (F6 toggles its visibility.) Then click on the color rectangle in the lower right to change the background color. Then rotate.

ETA: Oops! Sorry if I stepped on your toes, Steve. As far as Topaz, you're right, I'm not a fan, but would have shared if I had known. I don't really use plug-ins, and I would defer to you on more advanced PSP topics anyway.

Yup.

BTW, Bob, have you switched to PSP recently, or just happen to be using someone else's computer?

I had an old version (9) of paint shop pro that I purchased when it first came out. I since went to CS2. After my computer crashed due to the AVG update, I loaded windows 7. CS2 wasn't playing very well with Windows7, so I loaded my old PSP9 and that seems to work fine.

BTW, Brian, you're not stepping on any toes I don't believe. Steve seems to be the resident expert. It seems so few people use PSP.

Now, I found the materials pallet and changed the background color to black but I can't seem to make the image background change.

Thanks for the help Steve and Brian.

More than you might think are using it. Though it does sometimes seem like everyone else has the latest and greatest edition of Photoshop.

Since you've already made your edit I don't think it will change it after the edit. You could just fill it with the paint bucket tool. That might be easiest at the moment, rather than retracing your steps.

You can also drop a raster layer underneath your edit, rotate, then fill the background layer with whatever color you like. It's a bit trickier. Filling the triangular areas with color, as Steve suggested, might achieve the same effect. I just wonder if you'll get a smooth color gradient along the borders.

That worked great. Thanks. It's kind of difficult when I got so used to CS2 then switched back to PSP.

Steve, do you use photoshop also, or just PSP?
12/28/2010 12:25:51 PM · #16
Just PSP. I had Photoshop Elements on my Vista partiton for a while, but I never used it and recently uninstalled/unregistered it so that I could put it on Cowtownmom's new computer. Trying to get PSP X3 installed on my system now, but having issues resulting from the 30 day trial version leaving some bits behind.

I use PSP too. I have photoshop but cant figure it out so I will stick with what I know (atleast until I take some schooling). I love PSP. its very user friendly, and easy to work with!

Edit to add a question for Steve? I still use 9 --- how much do you think it would be worth it for me to look into upgraded to a new version of PSP?

Since I never used 9, I don't know what enhancements are added by upgrading to a more recent version. It's a cheap upgrade however and I'm sure there will be some benefit. I do know when I upgraded from V7 to X1, I definitely saw an improvement in image quality when resizing images.

You can get X1 for $5.95 and X2 for $22.95 from Purplus. (I've bought from them before, and they are reliable in my experience.) Once you have registered an older version, Corel will periodically e-mail you discount upgrade offers for the current version, which is X3 at this time.

Hi Steve and Brian

I won a copy of Corel Paintshop Photo Pro 3. I didn't need it as I have elements 8 and PS 3 so I gave it to one of my children. I am going to have to show them how to use it.

How similar is it to elements 8?
Will I have much trouble showing them how to use it?
Does it have a layer mask?

Thanks

I have version 9 also. The more I use it the more I learn.

Many of the tools and basic adjustments are similar enough that you will be able to recognize and use them. It does have layer masks, but they work a little different than in PhotoShop. In Photoshop, the mask is shown right next to the layer icon it it attached to. In PSP, the mask is shown in a group with the layer it works with. Just a slightly different concept in how it is presented, but it still works the same way. It did take me a while to wrap my head around masking.

Since this thread has brought a lot of PaintShop Pro users out of the woodwork, is anyone interested in doing a PaintShop Pro side challenge next month? Something where we can run it like a Q&A or a tutorial thread.

Count me in. I definitely need to learn more about it.
