I am new to LR3 (lots of CS5 photoshop and bridge experience and trying LR3 to see if it will help my workflow more than bridge)

Last one (for now!!)

As I work on my laptop I've imported my images from a temp directory and they will eventually end up in a different directory on my PC.

Can I move the location of where LR3 thinks my images for a collection are? I guess the better way would be to replicate the directory structure on my laptop for future imports .... assuming I can actually move the catalog from my laptop to the pc? and ideally have it on my 1TB usb drive so I could use the catalog on any machine?

this is what works for me: i import into LR, rename, edit, and process my images. i use windows explorer to physically move my images to my server and then rename the folder that the images were imported into; this breaks the link between LR and the images. the next time i view the images in a grid, there is a "?" in the top right corner, indicating the LR cannot find the image. click the "?" and it prompts me to find the missing image. i navigate out to the folder on my server where i moved the images, find the missing image, and click ok - making sure the option to find missing nearby photos is checked. then LR will relink all the images. since i have the same drive mappings on my laptop as i do on my pc's, i can then copy my LR catalog to any pc, open it, and be able to access all my images with all my edits and processings. the only thing i have to be careful of is to keep in mind that if i do additional processing done in LR, i will have to manually synchronize my LR catalogs.

the thing you have to remember is that even though the images can be accessed across a network, the LR database is a local database that cannot be accessed across a network.

cool, sounds simple enough, I'll give that a go :)

here are a few more thoughts on LR cataloging...

i have a catalog for each month, simply for performance. pulling the images over the network, especially when i have an average of 12,000 images a month, is resource intensive.

just for grins, i am in the process of building a catalog for each year, and a catalog of everything. considering the volumes i'm dealing with, this should be an interesting stress test.

do backup and maintain your backups! as much as i love LR, it is far from perfect and it will flake out from time to time. if you manage to corrupt a catalog, you can pretty much kiss it goodbye, as the repair tools are fairly inadequate :(
