I bought one awhile back and tested it out around the house. You need to zoom quite a bit to get outside the tube's vignetting. I bought it for some clandestine street photography, but it doesn't take much looking at the lens to see the mirror and gaping hole in the side so I figured it would cause more suspicion than just pointing a normal lens at people. Definitely not worth the price.

I built one when I was in college. It worked pretty well for what I used it for :)
Now, I just ask the girls to model for me.

So the giant big dramatic obvious hole in the side isn't noticeable?

Not as noticeable as you might think, especially from a distance.

I actually have one of them; I inherited it from my Dad. It definitely is only useful with longer focal lengths, and only for lenses with approx. 58mm or smaller front threads. It seems to work OK with my 100/2.8 Macro, but that's about the only lens I have that I could potentially use it with. Other than farting around I haven't used it at all.

I prefer the technique of mounting a small camera to the top of my shoe.

Distance makes perfect sense. The video showed rather close proximity images. :)
