I have a good idea of how to position 2 young children, 4 and 6 years for a Christmas card. But, any suggestions of what to do with a 6 month old? Either child can hold the baby, I'm just not sure what to do.

Any verbal or pictorial suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Paul

Anything you can pose the baby in would be good. A medium sized Christmas themed pot with some silk poinsettias scattered around maybe?

That's an idea :-) So, dress the baby like a poinsettia, put it in a pot, and have the older kids watering and pruning the baby? Or maybe not... Pay me no heed.

I don't think having the children hold the baby is a good idea. It usually leads to an awkward pose from the baby and the child holding it. I think your best solution is to have the baby in something and have the children posed around it.

These were taken several years ago, before I had a nice camera and new what I was doing, but it gives you an idea of what I am talking about.

The baby is just in a bouncer covered with a blanket. But a nice basket with a blanket would be great. It might be cute to have them leaning over the basket kissing the baby.

I found this cute example on the web. I think having them all laying on the floor in a pose something like this might be cute.

Or this pose with one child holding the baby like this and one child standing behind might work as well:

Like I said before the child holding the baby is a hard one, because most of the time the child doesn't know how to hold it properly and the baby starts crying.

Thanks. This was my thought as well, which is one of the reasons I'm at a loss here.

Can the baby sit up at all? We use a nursing pillow at work to help our young sitters not topple over. You could drape that with cotton batting, like your would put in a quilt and not the stuff you fill a pillow with, and then place the older kids around them. The use of some toys or holiday decorations can fill the picture up a bit and give the little ones something to do to help keep them busy.

The biggest thing I could tell you from a Nursery Teacher is set things up, put the kids in place and take your shots quickly. Make sure it's after nap time or early enough in the morning. 5:00 pm seems to be the witching hour and I would stay AWAY from anything after that. They are just crabby. Make a game of it. Have a helper for each of the bigger kids if you can or at least 1 to get them to look and smile. Have food available to keep them from getting hungry. Play music near them, not just in the room because babies really like music and it usually helps to keep them happy.

Have fun with it.

Thanks. The baby can sit up just fine, he's 6 months. I'm figuring one way to hold his attention is to have him hold an ornament, or a small present box, something Christmas.

I was originally going to have the tree in the background, the older boy in back of the younger girl and turned angled toward me. Cropping for their torso's up. How to fit the baby in there may change how I crop. But, I"m starting to get some ideas.

Thanks
