I would buy a friend of mine a new car, travel a bit and leave the rest to my daughter...she truly deserves it.

I'd charter a special photographic Dory trip down the Grand Canyon and invite a select few people from dpc and elsewhere - all they'd have to pay for is their own fare to get there and home, plus trip costs for any family members that would want to tag along.
Then I'd buy a house and manage the rest of the money accordingly. ;-)

Pay off debts, mortgage etc. buy a new vehicle... probably buy some new photo toys while I'm at it and rent a studio space. Stash the rest away for a rainy day/retirement.

A million dollars isn't really "take this job and shove it" money anymore.

I'd start with paying off my student loans. Then I'd buy Photo Shop and a computer that's fast enough to actually run it. Then I'd buy a pack of plane tickets: Namibia, DRC, Maldives, Bahrain, Jordan, Azerbaijan, Burma, Mongolia, Tuvalu/Nauru/Vanuatu, Bolivia, Uruguay, and Cuba, for starters. I have pretty solid ideas for what I would photograph in each location. Then I'd buy a few more plane tickets to go pester magazines and agencies to get my photographs published, so I can earn enough to keep traveling and shooting. With whatever's left, I'd buy a small house on the Namibian coast.

Mmm, dreams.

"Deserve" is an interesting choice of words.

You didn't say "needed" it. You didn't say "put it to good use." but rather "deserved" it.

An Olympic athlete deserves recognition for a gold medle performance. A worker deserves to be paid for the job he agreed to do. A murder deserves his punishment under the law.

"Deserves" implies they have done something that has earned them the right to receive it. I am truely curious what criteria you would use to determine who "deserved" to receive some fraction of a million out of the blue from some total stranger.

Maybe "deserve" was a casual symantic choice. Maybe I think too much.

Kids. It would all go to kids and helping them cope with their adult given problems.

All kids deserve it.

Good answer.

Kinda funny, my wife and I just taliked about this tonight. Once the mortage was taken care of and a system to pay off the bills...I would fully explore my artistic side...Photography, writing, woodcrafting, videos....Things like that. When I was younger I was told to nerver grow old and regret that you didn't do something. I tried to live that way, but failed in on way. I never truly explored my artistic side! Now it's time!

When I was younger, my house got flooded out and we didn't receive any FEMA money, so my family lost their house and pretty much everything that resided in it. As a result, I'd buy my parents a house. Then I'd give my close friends five grand each, in appreciation of them always being there for me. After school, I would like to do some volunteering abroad for at least six months to a year, which takes a surprising amount of money to do. Along with this, I'd probably pick up a few lenses and do photography wherever I went. Travel for a couple months on a dirtbag budget to minimize costs and more importantly to maximize experience. After that, I'd either buy a bit of land and build a simple house or get a house in city, not sure which. Of the remainder, I'd split between my retirement fund and causes I found throughout the rest of my life that warrant it. Oh yeah- I'd probably get a vehicle that gets better mileage and isn't such a POS. Newer used SUV or crossover vehicle; just something big enough for me to sleep in for on climbs and stuff.

First I'd move out of my tiny, tiny apartment into something roomier, with lots of bookshelves and workspaces. Maybe have room for a studio.

a million isn't much these days:

Pay my tithe.
Pay off my house.
Put some in an account for my girls educations and weddings.
Put the rest towards retirement.

Pretty boring list, but I am a pretty practical person when it comes to money.

Oh okay, I would probably go on a fun family vacation and buy some new clothes too.:)

ETA: and camera equipment cant forget the camera equipment, my lonely lens needs some friends.

large house near a Florida beach. maybe you can make the down payment on such a house (unless it is rural or such). "P

I would pay off our mortgage, other debts, set aside a chunk for my kids, give to charity and live on the rest. :)

I'd sit down with an accountant and work out how I could retire now, live off part of it, but still have some left for my daughter.
I'd buy myself a new car since I have never owned a car newer than 5 years old.

I'd fine some really good photographer and hire them to teach me how to do what they do. Then I'd move south, retire on the rest and go shooting for the rest of my life!

If I won a million today I'd fly docpjv to the states and pay for his operation.

1) Pay off mortgage
2) Put away for my daughter's college
3) Keep working knowing that work is bringing in extra money and if I got laid off there was no bother.
4) With working longer, retire early with enough of a nest egg from not spending the money on the mortgage.

There of course would be other things such as helping my sisters with their mortgage. Money for parents for their retirement. etc.

The point is, wouldn't blow it extravagantly. I'd be frugal but generous, planning for the future.

But if the operation was taken care of, then the mother of all DPC GTGs, inviting everyone from around the world, to celebrate docpjv's recovery.

It is humbling to see so many people car. Thanks, you have me all teary.

The operation will be around $25,000 - $30,000, so you guys will have plenty left, don't worry LOL.

I joked with a few that I should actually put my body out on a raffle; 30 tickets @ $1,000 each. First prize 1 Week, Second prize, 3 days and 3rd to prize 1 day. That means they owe me and may do what you want.

Then I realized, what if a man wins....?
What a thought for a man who is a total, unrepentant, out of the closet lesbian as me. So there goes that idea.

I would like to have the previous idea, one massive GTG of our family, added to my wish list. What a bright idea!

A million after the tax man come, will be about $600,000.
1st, either pay off house, or preferably sell it and move the hell out of Utah, $100 to 150 thousand.
Pay off other debts mostly medical 50K.
Hire a lawyer to sue work comp and get back most of above 50 thousand, 5K.
Daughter wants to be a Geologist, best school for that is in the south east (Kansas, Kentucky or some such) $100,000.
I̢۪m much older than my wife $250,000 in well diversified stocks and bonds.
Leaving about 40K for play split with wife.
Canon 1D mark 4.
400 F2.8L IS.
70-200 F2.8L IS
16-35 F2.8L
Good tripod,
580EX

Back to work..

How about if we all go out today and buy a lottery ticket... we could pool our winnings together.
