Thanks, I've been eyeing the new Tamron 70-300. With that discount and the rebate, it makes it $331. Sweet price.

I've had my eye on that same lens. This is going to be hard to resist.

You don't own that thing yet? Really?

I am debating the 70-200 â€Â¦ half the price of the Nikon 80-200 and bascially 1/4 the price of the Nikon 70-200.

I got tired of waiting for it to come out in the Canon mount and had a big airshow coming up, so I bought a used Sigma 70-300 on Ebay. The Sigma is pretty good, but reviews suggest the Tammy is equal to or better than the Canon. Might sell the Sigma for a sweet price if anyone on DPC is interested in a bargain.

Yes, but I'm a budget minded (read as "cheapskate") gear junkie.

I'm itching to buy a new lens. I had the 17-50 and I loved it! I am thinking about the 28-75. Or should I buy a pro prime for portraits. I thnk the canon 85? or am I wrong? What are the pros using these days for fashion/portraits?

I've been using the Tamron 18-270mm zoom for almost a year, and have been pretty happy with it. Nice versatility. Look that the pictures JulietNN gets with it. But, for shooting on the marsh, that 200-500 looks nice...

I'm not sure you can really compare the two... very different lenses.
I'd have to say I love my 85 more than the 28-75, but in practice they are used under different circumstances. Optically the 28-75 is outstanding, and I'll take it along with me backpacking due to it's outstanding quality and versatility (it has a surprisingly large reproduction ratio). But if weight isn't a concern, I bring along the beast, my Nikon 28-70. The whole reason I got it (used, mind you) is because the AF of the 28-75 left me unimpressed and frequently frustrated me for anything moving. But the 85 is just a fun lens to shoot with, and I really enjoy it. The biggest question between those two is if a prime is alright with you. Outside, where settings aren't static, the 85 can be a bit frustrating to me because sometimes objects are just in the way and I need to change my focal length. So I'd say they are both quality and would be great for your needs, but decide if you want flexibility or 1.8. Personally though, when I've done portraits, I've set out with both, started with the 85 and switched to my 28-70 if I needed to. I wouldn't have a problem with taking the 28-75 instead if I'm doing portraits either, as AF isn't an issue and optically they are on par with each other.
