Remember, the Masters part of this does NOT refer to DPC masters or ribbon winners. It refers to those we wish to study, to learn from, who were/are masters of their trade beyond the DPC-verse. I'm thinking it is more about the learning than the performance, but I could be way out in left field. I do have to say it is nice in left field. And usually a different ballpark. Quiet, lonely, but nice!

And Melethia would need a fund-raising event to send her to Europe for this one... :-)

"No cropping" was a ruleset HCB imposed on himself. To fully experience his admirable ability to compose under pressure I would prefer to see his belief on cropping enforced - either with Basic Editing and a "no crop" special rule, or, if necessary, with the Minimal Editing ruleset. Maybe in the future. HCB VII.

Truthfully, it could be run under Expert Editing, and it would still all be good...

I would completely agree with a no-crop special rule regardless of the ruleset. I don't think we can adequately emulate HCB in minimal editing, however; our modern digital cameras don't do that kind of B/W very well without some help...

"No cropping" would be pretty easy to enforce as an extra rule. The other suggestion requiring a specific focal length would probably make things too complicated and drive away some people needlessly. If we really wanted to get technical we'd force everyone to shoot film using only a Leica. Oh and sorry Lumix equals DQ. :P

Actually I thought it might be about the free airline tickets Langdon would provide for this challenge...

Minimal or Basic.

50mm would be a nice rule, but as has been mentioned, I don't think it's practical to implement or enforce. Hopefully the keen eyed among us can pick out a super wide angle or telephoto and vote accordingly.

No crop sounds good to me. I've totally gotten away from cropping this year. An oddly proportioned frame should be called in for validation.

My two cents. Vive le moment decisif!

Spoilsport... :-)

I don't have an equivalent 50mm, but I could go for slapping my 50mm on the camera and doing whatever I can with that. I don't think it should be a rule, though. A challenge to those who wish to accept it (ie shoot prime!) but not a rule. I agree with the no-crop. I enjoye no-crop. I also enjoy no processing, but only because it's WAY faster and easier to not crop or process. :-)

Edward Weston.
At Wiki.

One of the finest photographers of form, perhaps one of the most influential of 20th century photographers. He's in yanko's original post, but I really would like to see this challenge.

As would I. I'd also love to see Wynn Bullock and Minor White. Eliot Porter would be lovely. Galen and Barbara Rowell. Richard Avedon. Irving Penn. Most mentioned before, I'm sure, so shoot me :-)

Now I don't mind if we switch to basic editing if it makes it a little easier to shoot in HCB's style, but please lets not make this about technical matters. This isn't about running another minimal editing ruleset just for the sake of it. It's about the chosen photographer. His famous quote was "To take a photograph is to align the head, the eye and the heart. It's a way of life." Lets all try to get that in focus.

Because there are too many people on this site who think they are the king/queen and want to rule the place and what everyone does in it. Yes, freedom of speech but how about freedom of style?

As far as I am concerned...many people do well on this site...not just for creativity but also for their technique....whether it be in camera or in processing. If you want to see what these 'masters' are capable of...then give them the freedom to do so. But that's my two cents....which will probably go ignored anyway. I'm used to that.

I'm not really sure who you're referring to by "they", whether that includes me or not. Regardless, if you think these suggestions are too limiting then maybe suggest a new challenge that has the type of freedom you want to see. And FWIW, nobody listens to me either. If my HCB suggestion actually runs it'll be a first for me. So it would be nice if it actually stayed close to what I envisioned. Now, I'm certainly open to suggestions as to how to improve the suggestion so long as it stays within the spirit of the challenge.

bspurgeon did suggest Bullock earlier. I know I already mentioned Avedon but I don't believe the others you mentioned have been suggested so you may want to make an official post for those that has the type of links that Paul asked for. That is of course only when you get bored of that glass-like water surrounding you.

Lock it, rename it and delete it same time. Format the server which hosts this thread and give its Hard Drive to Art Roflmao to burn it...

Seems a futile exercise bumping this again, but just for the heck of it I'm going to.

I'm glad you bumped it - it had slipped my mind! Tomorrow is my last day of work until Jan 7th so I'd love some challenges like this to get my teeth into!

yes... I imagine, with the recent huge success of the Nixter and Posthumous challenges, langdon is sitting at home trying to figure out the earliest time he can fit the Master's Series into the schedule. I would wager he decides upon a month long challenge, starting in the middle of this month.

Oh, what great fodder this series will make, while we anxiously await the beginning of the new DPL3 season!
