Will lenses from a mid 70s vintage Nikon SLR 35mm camera fit mine - either manual or auto focus?

Is a used lens worth buying, or do I just need to search out the best values for new equipment?

Thanks!!

Only with an adapter, then you will have another piece of glass in the light path, as well as only being able to operate full manually.
If you had a Nikon DSLR, you could use the old glass directly on the camera if it has the "Ai" feature, or has been "Ai'd". Of course focusing would be manual, and metering functionality would not be there for most of the camera models.
I use a Fuji, designed to use the Nikon lens line, and quite a lot of my photos are shot using older Nikkor lenses. It don't meter with them, but that's ok.
My next camera, the Nikon D7000 will meter on aperture priority with the older Ai lenses.
ETA, You will need an adapter if you plan to use any of the older Canon FD series lenses on your EOS camera.

Actually, no! There are Nikon F-mount to Canon EOS adapters that do not contain any optics and do retain infinity focus. This one is the one I use (scroll way down to NEOS). An adapter like this is possible because the F-mount body is deeper than the EOS body, and the F-mount flange is smaller.
I have successfully used an old 200/2.0 AIS lens on my 5D body. The only thing you need to watch out for is interference with the mirror on FF cameras, with APS-C there is no issue at all.

ETA: There are cheaper adapters, and there are even adapters that provide for "focus confirmation" though no,t of course, AF.
