i've only been on the site for almost 2 months and i'm already bored of seeing the same photos, just once in a while i see something more creative. that's what i was saying...i don't even know what to comment on pics anymore, they are beautiful but it feels like a lot of them are the same.

Go click on the blue "here" in tanguera's original post - it's a hyperlink to another thread on the site, I'm guessing.

There isn't much new under the sun. When I first started it was sunsets and icelandic landscapes. It seemed like every challenge was won by a sunset or an icelandic landscape. However, once you get past that, you'll notice the other incredible things lurking around. You just have to look a little more. They might not be on the front page, but they're there.

Words that can have different meanings, and with no descriptions, just the words, so we can see how creative people really can get. such as...glass (there's glasses, seeing through a glass, a glass you drink out of etc) stuff like that. although i'm sure people will still find a way to throw landscapes and birds in there.

The more open challenges are the free studies. It's more challenging to work within a very limited range and come up with something creative than to have all the challenges be extremely broad. They're not limiting creativity -- they're trying to channel it to get people out of their comfort zone.

LOL, my bad, didn't mean to pick on birds, and actually the one you entered is a wonderful shot, but i'm guessing since the challenge was ...umm, i forgot, "out of the ordinary" or something like that, then i'm guessing the rest of the photos had very different and creative things. A challenge like that, i'd like to enter, vote and comment.

However, since i've only been here for a short time, the challenges i've entered and voted to were: "below the knees, midday sun, sound, wildlife and homemade landscapes" which in my opinion are just..eh..I don't know if it's because most of the photos were very similar or because the challenge didn't leave much to the imagination.

Maybe I expect too much, seeing that you guys are so good with your cameras, have really good lenses, know how to use them, and know photoshop, I expected to see more then ...landscapes, animals, bugs and the like. I'm not sure if i'm explaining myself very well and I don't mean to put anyone down or DPC , i'm simply stating my opinion to why I think there are people leaving from the site.

I get very few comments on my photos and mostly good ones even though the score is not very good. Are people just bored with commenting, they have better things to do or are they afraid to hurt someone's feelings?

That entire forum is called "Challenge Suggestions". Look up at the top of the page that is linked. You should see: DPChallenge Forums >> Challenge Suggestions

She was pointing out all the different threads that already suggest challenges. If you read through some, you'll see that some have recently been done.

I'd say that there has to be a degree of repetition/simplicity in the challenges because otherwise it is discouraging to the average person, which is who this site is geared towards. Readily accessible means typical. And that's okay, because it serves the purpose of this site well (a learning and jump off point for people).
Regarding comments, a lot of people feel awkward saying negative things about photos, and a some photographers are negative about negative comments and will send disgruntled PM's to those who are willing to throw them out there. And also, consider what simms alluded to earlier-

Also whilst WE all know that it not the be all and end all to get a low score, a lot of people probably turn up here, having bought their expensive DSLR, having been told they `take a lovely picture` by friends, family etc. then place in the bottom 20% of the challenge with some pretty harsh comments. My guess is this happens a LOT. They never come back, I daresay if we could run a search on users to see how many joined, entered a single challenge then never returned it would be a pretty high headcount.

I'm with you though, negative comments are great. They're certainly more useful to me (assuming they explain why they're negative). We should start a "negative comment campaign." ;)

Haha, ya we should. I still don't get how keeping things "boring?" will make new members feel more comfortable. It's quite the opposite for me, i'm new, so from my opinion, if there was more creativity and new, different cool ideas, it would keep me more interested.

What I mean is that they're easy to shoot for. If you have obscure weird ones, they aren't easy to shoot for and it makes a lot of people shy away from entering out of timidity. Since this is largely a learning environment, that isn't too beneficial to things. That's not to say that there shouldn't be periodic challenges that ARE more difficult and push things a bit.
