ask a highly respected member or two here to help with a personal project, if it gives up some amount of anonymity in a current challenge?

I think it would be fine to ask them personally how they feel about it -- they may or may not want to for other reasons as well. Anonymity in the challenges is desirable, but many people discuss their entries (or prospective entries) with other members, just outside of the actual site or the forums, and that's fine.
