What was the First Rubber Ducky Challenge?
11/20/2010 12:51:06 PM · #27
If you look under each name there is a ribbon.......Rubber Ducky . I missed out for some reason. But it's kind of cool to have it on your home page. I'm sure the kids will like. (I wish I had one...Lol)

I think you are making it far too complex. Note that in my experience DPC Side Challenges are not judged competitions -- at least I've never seen a posting announcing that someone had "won" a Side Challenge.

Rather, they are an opportunity for people to concentrate on one type of photo for an extended period, and to exchange comments and suggestions.

To me, it makes more sense to simply ask kids below a certain age to post their (themed or not) pictures in a particular place during a specified time period, and for the rest of you to make a commitment to comment on all of the photos. In this case, I don't see a need for judges or scorekeeping -- this is supposed to be art, not soccer. I also don't think you should have either entry fees or prizes.

If any kids want to compete for a ribbon, they can enter the regular challenges. One of the great things about the DPC system is that the kids get to compete on an exactly equal basis, and their work will be judged on its merits rather than by the photographer's identity.

Also, if any of you have under-13 year olds you want to register, copy, fill out, and send in the DPC Waiver for Minors found at the beginning of this thread.

GeneralE.....Actually there has been a couple side challenges with ribbon winners. I more proud of this ribbon then the couple I've won in challenges.....Better then Average side challenge

edit: not a judged competition, as in votes for the best image.

And I am doing one right now, not necessarily a ribbon but a virtual award will be given to the top three photos in my side challenge.

I'd be happy to help out, although I'm probably not particularly qualified. Not too interested in getting in on the debate of the format, prizes, etc. You'll all work out what's best. But if you need another judge, I'm willing.

I understand the debate. I think children love to get something. Have a new idea.

The littlest ones is a gallery and each child will get a certificate of participation that they can have to see and keep.
The 9-12 year olds each get a certificate of participation and a real and virtual ribbon, will be judged. for 1-3 and honorable mentions for 4 & 5.

The Teens will each get a certificate of participation, a place ribbon and prize for 1-3 places, and honorable mention for places 4 & 5.

This way each child has something they can see, feel and show off that they did this.

How will this work for you guys?

Ellen

I think it's good for the little ones -- gallery and certificate of participation.

I think it would be nice to have prizes for both of the other age groups.

I'd love to help -- but my availability is very spotty during that time. Let me know if there's something that I can still help with.

OK -- thanks for the update. The vast majority of DPC Side Challenges do not involve determining a "best" photo, and I still don't think this one needs to either. I will try to let my son ( Isaac) know about this ...
