â€Â¢ The images that win the mainstream DPC ribbons are usually only incidentally about anything else.

This is as wrong as saying posthumous ribboning images are blurry and full of noise. It's offensive. NOT joking.

You're quite right; they are usually offensive as well. Sorry. AM joking.

I am self-righteously offended by this conversation!

I don't get it... really!

For me, it means an open ended story telling shot with a bit of mystery and/or quirk. More entertainment value and meaning than flash and eye-candy. But this has probably been discussed to death in threads frequented by those finger-snapping artsies. The ones I bump into on the sidewalk accidentally on purpose. ;-)

That explains the grandisimo latte mochachino stains on your shirt every morning.

But I'm more into slapstick than deep, meaningful messages. Unless the purpose of the slapstick is to poke fun and laugh at the deep, meaningful messages. ;-D

i see that this is an open challenge. everyone can enter and everone can vote. But most of the people who understand what a posthumous ribbon entry in dpc are the ones who have been here for quite sometime. I just hope that the voters who understand what the challenge is about are not overwhelmed by those who don't, otherwise i will be expecting wine glasses eye-candy shots in the front page.

I may enter, but man, this one is a landmine of a challenge.

Since Don Posthumous is the sole decision maker in who gets a Posthumous ribbon, then we are asking the voters to think like Don, WWDD, if you will.

1. Can anyone really get inside Don's mind and vote like he does?
2. Does any one really want to go there? ;-)
3. If the premise is that Don rewards photographers for thinking outside the box, and you have a lot of what would normally be considered outside the box, then logic dictates that the eye candy shots that don't normally get Posthumous consideration because they are not outside the box, are indeed, in this case, outside the box.

Now I have a headache.

hmm glass on white, water drops, and flowers will be OOB for this challenge then.
Now how would it look to have a beautiful water drop shot finish first in this challenge?
I believe I have found inspiration. ;)

i may purposely try to the replicate a pretty overdone shot for THIS challenge just to test the voters...

Do you think any of the top ten Posthumous challenge winners will receive a Posthumous ribbon? Should be interesting to watch :-)

Thank you, langdon!

What amuses me is that my opinion on this challenge is worth no more than anyone else's. After all, the voter decides as always. So, it's not really about getting inside my mind, but rather about getting inside the mind of a dpc voter trying to get inside my mind.

ubique gives an important insight into my approach to photography, and probably explains it better than I will. I treat each challenge entry as a work of art, and judge it accordingly. From my perspective, photography is just a tool used to create that work of art. Contrary to what many around here think, your photography skills DO give you an advantage, as long as you remember that photography is the means, not the end.

My only worry is that there will be too many wonderful pictures for me to hand out my usual 3 ribbons. That's a good worry to have!

I am handing a FREE HAT to Brown ribbon winner of this challenge. Whoever comes last, will get a hat :)

Good luck... I mean "Baaaaad luck"

Yes, I will be fascinated by this, too! I will also look for trends between my scores and dpc scores.

I'm also fascinated by the thought of people cynically trying to create a stereotypical posthumous photo. I actually think a lot about how my esthetic can turn into a stereotype as easily as anyone else's.

If you don't like the idea of merely switching stereotypes, let me tell you what I personally would like to see in this challenge. A photo that you care about, not because it is a good photograph, but because the image MEANS SOMETHING to you. Notice that "means" can refer to intellect or emotion or spirit. Notice also that I have said nothing about how the photograph should LOOK. If you notice both of those things, then you are on your way, imho.

This fascinates me, too. What does it mean to be "bad" in this challenge?

Ok, let's change it too,

The last photo gets the HAT... some may like it, make their favorite, who knows... So, don't call it "BAD", call it "LAST"... aka "Brown"

is that ok?

Um... I said I was fascinated. Do you think there's something wrong with being fascinated? I wasn't complaining about anything.

LOL!!!! I'm going to shoot for this challenge. My goal is to capture and process an image which does not betray my realistic style. A fine exercise in thinking more creatively. I am not sure I can accomplish goal, but I will make a good faith effort.
11/19/2010 12:45:09 PM · #46
I'm going to shoot something along the lines of what I have done before that has gotten Don's attention. Reflections, shadows, semi-abstract views of things. Looking at things a little differently. This will fun to enter and vote on.

I'll be rooting for cutout, however. I'd love to see him snag a ribbon.

oh and one more thing, I do appreciate "beauty" and vote high for "beauty." However, slick images designed to create desire do not constitute "beauty" in my book. "Beauty" is more about longing than desire. Or the composition can be so balanced that it gives you a sense of serenity. That is also beauty.

So, for beauty...

Longing, not desire.
Serenity, not complacency.

But there are many, many ways to do this thing.

just thinking out loud.......

So what you're saying is that in this challenge we get to appreciate photographs as UNIQUE works of intellectual art...
So if we come across a cliché shot- it definitely deserves a "1" and a DNMC. Got it! (just kidding)
This should be quite interesting!!! Can we just let Don take a few days and vote on all the photos? LOL

I've noticed that the monthly Free Study challenge no longer has the old description "submit your best photo taken during ____" which I think is a positive change -- I had lobbied to change the description to read something like "submit the photo taken duing ___ which you most want the DPC community to see."

A good approach! Enjoy the process as that is important as well, I think.
