I started at 8:30. It is now 15:08 and I have just finished my first ever comment-on-every-submission marathon.
I take my hat off to those of you who tackle open challenges with 400+ entries. As you can see, it has taken me 7 hours (I did break for lunch) to comment on 133 entries for Portrait.
My apologies for many typos and to those few whose submissions did not get my wildest enthusiasm (ignore my comments if you don't like them, what do I know?).
It was a very interesting experience. I said similar things many times but it was a learning experience and well worth the effort for me.
I wish you all Good Luck with your entries. This particular challenge seems to have brought out the best in a great many people - my faith in DPC is momentarily restored. |

Well, you left a great comment for mine and I much appreciate it. It was most helpful. I just finished voting and am looking forward to going back to comment. There were some striking shots in this challenge. Good job to everyone!(in case I don't get to all of them):-) |

I got your comment a short time ago Hugh and considering the fact that you must have been well into your marathon..you left a very detailed and constructive comment..which has gone some way to helping me make sense of my score.
Well done and thank you.

Way to go Hugh!
When I first joined I used to comment on every entry in a challenge but I found I simply couldn't keep up.
I do still try and comment as much as possible and recently managed about 120+ for the Silence challenge.
But that's unusual.
It certainly does take a lot of time investment and commitment and I am sure anyone who has received a comment from you is grateful for your time.
I've entered for the Parallel Lines challenge and in the March Free Study - my first entries since June last year - so I am hopeful that I will receive lots of valuable comments on those!

Indeed - having not entered for a while I'm pleasantly surprised to be reading 4 comments within the first 12 hours of voting (if only my score was doing as well... /sigh)
Your efforts are very much appreciated! |

It's funny how all these comment drives I wasn't able to get a shot in any of the challenge :( including the world record one. Here's hoping that people still browse the galleries to make comments :)
Sometimes with the bad weather it's easier to learn by making comments then to go out and take pictures.
Good luck on your endeavor. |

Thanks for the feedback on mine as well. I sure appreciate comments and I've decided to also try my hand at commenting on as many as I can in this challenge. I've moved through about 30 so far. Hopefully, I'll have a comment on everyone's by the end of the week. I'd have to say the entries in this challenge are among the best I've seen since joining. |

Big ups to you Hugh! You left the best comment on mine so far. In fact, now I'm glad I chose a risqué (well kinda) shot for the challenge. THanks! I hope to be inspired by your diligence when I get some time!

"A little too blurry for my taste "???
What the hell is blurry ?!! *&$#@+@
Photo is not taken with 5 $ one use camera ,objects which are not important should be blurry!
What kind of idiotic comment is that?
Ok,feels better now ,:-)

Hey Pitsaman
I did say "ignore my comments if you don't like them - what do I know?" I guess understanding the use of DoF is like appreciating fine wine, it is a taste one has to acquire. I used to hate any lack of clear focus in a photo. Over time, I have learned to appreciate its value in guiding the eye to the main point of interest. Occasionally I revert - sorry if I hurt your feelings - had I known it was your entry I would have been more respectful!!

Thanks Hugh for your comment I really apreciate it as you seem to be one of the verry few who understood and apreciated what I whas trying to do. I will reply after challenge because I really got allot of contrasting coments and I want to reply to them all in a thread.
Pitsaman your atitude sucks a bunch mate. Your picture can suck even with the most expensive camera ever, + the man said "for my taste". So if you think someone is idiotic for having his one taste, ill say your the idiot. Learn to take comments good or bad dude.

Thanks for your comment Hugh. Much appreciated.
As for the overall comments I have gotten so far on my portrait shot I see that this kind of photography is more subjective than many other fields of photography. |

Gary,
I've only been shooting portraits for about a year but I've learned one thing between this site, PhotoSIG and FredMiranda: no consensus on portraits. Perhaps my portrait skills aren't even approaching your studio stock shot skills but I feel I do a better than average job and of several thousand photos I've found that the only people I can really worry about making happy are the ones either in the photo or the ones that commission the work. It feels good to get that positive feedback but I never expect much from online communities as far as "warm fuzzies" 'cause there is just such divergence in what people look for in portraits. I know that if I want to impress some people on FredMiranda I need to shoot a particular way. If I want a higher score on PhotoSIG I should shoot more skin (to get the vote counts up) but it doesn't have to be artistic poses as much. I've stayed out of the contests on DPC lately because I'm not the most creative person from the start and its a pain to take hours to setup something only to tank in the challenges. Now I shoot with a couple of different models every weekend and as long as they like what we produce, I like some and I keep getting paying gigs I'm pretty happy.
