I tried taking some star shots tonight with the 300D and I can't get the camera to focus on infinity so all I get a big round blobs instead of points. My little Kodak DX4900 works fine. Am I doing something wrong? How can I get the camera to focus? I would try manual focus but that's hard when I can barely see the stars through the viewfinder. Help!!!

The reason for this is that probably your Kodak is using active auto-focusing. This means that the camera sends a ray and then calculates the time is takes to bounce back. For sky, it never bounces back and thus focusses at infinity. As for the 300D it uses passive auto focussing (typical of SLR cameras). This means that it calculates best focussing depending on picture contrast which is practically non-existant for stars. Your best solution is to focus the camera on a distant object (some far off building, road lamp, etc). This will be basically at infinity focus point. Then set the lens to MF and your stars should be as sharp as anything.
