My Tamron 18-270mm lens suddenly developed a jamming problem. It's an extension twist tube zoom, and it just wouldn't twist past a half inch, effectively locking me in wide angle mode. I couldn't budge it with moderate force, and didn't want to break anything by really forcing it. My sweetie found a work-around by just pulling it from the lens tip (although that doesn't work 100%). It has not become an intermittent problem, as it worked just fine yesterday, then again jammed at the end of the day.

My questions are:
a) do you know what could be causing this
b) is it worth repairing or should I consider a new lens

I ADORE this lens and would hate to get rid of it.

FYI, I'm going to the camera store later to see what my options are, but thought I'd post here first. Also, any suggestions for another lens with similar zoom range... (I'm aware of the limitations of this enormous focal distance but it serves my needs).

You have something that has broken off inside the lens and is fouling the track that holds the front element. Talk to the folks at Tamaron. I had a similar problem with a Sigma 50-500 and they fixed it without fuss or cost, 3 years later the lens is just fine, but get it dealt with while it is outside the lenses, just messing with the expansion mechanisms, not knocking bits of coating off the glass.

My old one (the wet one) was starting to do this a lot as well. It was getting bad, I had to hold the camera upside down and then let it sort of fall and twist at the same time. It kinda felt like I should oil it, does that make sense?

I cured it totally by giving it a sea wash and buying a new one lol

Thanks everyone. I did drop it off at Samy's, and in the meantime, sweetie bought me a gorgeous 18-108. Now I have the runabout lens and one for my studio work. Very exciting :-)

@ Juliet - oddly enough, yes it does make sense, LOL!

Well, funnily enough, it now works perfectly fine. It completely works, so now have two Tamrons!

Not that I am recommending washing it in sea water! lol
