| I saw McNallyusing one of these in a blog post. (Scroll down to the rail road bridge images) I got rid of all my lenses a while back except for the kit lens. I'm wondering if I should consider one of these.Anyone here have one yet? I'm aware that it will be a compromise lens but I've heard a lot of good things about it. It would let me do a little Macro work along with every thing else as it's near focus is about 12 inches from the front of the lens at all focal lengths. One downside is the kilo buck price! Upside is size. I did some surveillance type photography back in the 70's and I sure could have used that lens back then with a D3S and it's superhuman hi ISO performance! |

| Sounds like a cool piece of glass, I should check it out. Sure could use a good wildlife lens. |

I bought this lens when I got the D700. It performs pretty well with little distortion. However I did notice on a couple of shots that there was some vignetting when used in portrait mode with sky as the background. I'll see if I can find a couple of photos tonight sometime. I need to try it on the D300 to see how it acts.
It is pricey and I don't normally buy a new model lens until it has been well reviewed and used, but I needed the extra reach for FF. I'll put up something later. |

Um.....it's FX format. Will that work on the crop sensor cameras properly?

You're right, it is FX format. I think I took some photos using this lens and the D300, but I am not sure. I will try to do something using both cameras with the lens at the weekend and post some here. The problem is I do a lot of Macro or just close-up and when EXIF says 300mm, I have a job remembering if it is the 28-300mm on the D300 at 300mm or the 70-300mm on the D300 at 300mm. I need to try harder and make some notes:)
ETA: Just remembered, both lenses are FX!! 70-300mm works fine with crop factor.

Nikon specs indicate it will work fine with DX. Just gives a little more
apparent reach to the lens. Sounds like it might be just the compromise lens
I've been waiting for. Only priced about 500 bux out of my budget. LOL |

Yeah, FX lenses work on everything, DX works but cropped. You'll get less (usually zero) vignetting on a DX sensor when using an FX lens because they're designed for full coverage, so the portion that is more likely to vignette is essentially left off due to sensor size.
Out of curiosity, FireBird, is there a reason why the 18-200 wouldn't work for you? It's got the same drawbacks as any superzoom (which is particularly evident around 135 but then improves towards 200) but it's a pretty solid lens and super versatile. Personally, I'd be more concerned with missing the wide end on the lens than that extra 100 on the top.
When I went to New Zealand for a few weeks, I brought my Sigma 10-20, Nikon 18-200, and Tamron 28-75. 90% of the time the 18-200 was on my camera and worked beautifully for what I needed. If I were to suggest a jack of all trades lens it would definitely be the 18-200, plus it's more in your budget. |

spiritualspatulaI've already got the kit lens for the wide angle shots. Plus most of the warts of a zoom will appear at the extreme ends. So I would hope the distant end would be pretty good up to 270mm, but the bottom would only be gold at 50mm which I can cover with the kit lens. Plus I'm reading that many of the problems are correctable in software. Also the super will focus as close as 14 inches to the front glass at all focal lengths so I could have a quasi macro lens out of the deal too.
Just dreaming anyway as the money isn't available to get this lens anytime soon. Of course I do have a lottery ticket for tonight. LOL |

Gotcha. I thought you had said you wanted a single lens, so I had misunderstood you somehow. And yeah, it does focus pretty close. The 18-200 does a decent job (.22x) but the 28-300 goes up to .32x.
How's the lottery ticket coming? ;) |

Had to waste a buck on another one. Seems the odds against me are
about 75 million to one. LOL |
