Nikon's D70 is due out in the states shortly and I am #6 on the list (at local store). Called my local camera store to "negotiate" another $3000 worth of gear (besides the D70 price) and they did not seem interested (wouldn't even consider anything less than normal retail prices). Well it is my money, so I'm now going to spend it elsewhere.
Conundrum.....Royal Camera has D100's listed at $1049.00. With a vertical grip (229.00) not available on the D70, price is under 1300.00 Plus the D100 has a metal body and proven mechanics.
The Fuji S2 Pro @ 12million pixels is under $1300.00 and I believe it has a Nikon F mount so my Nikkors would work.
Questions:
1. Anyone done business with Royal Camera?
2. Anyone know for sure if Nikkors work on the Fuji S2 pro? (they do)
3. Any thoughts, advice, or considerations regarding possible oversights?

Fuji S2 Pro should be available at a reduced price as Fuji have announced the S3 pro out soon - S1/S2/S3 are all basically a Nikon N80 (F80) body with Fuji Insides

Much too confusing. Get a 10D and you will rock hard core. :P

Dood, I love Nikon. I shoot a D1x at work and have a D100 as a backup camera. I can tell you from experiance not to get a D100. It is very noisy. D100 at ISO200 looks like a D1x at ISO400-640.
I have heard great things about Fuji S2. If I were spending $1000-$1300 I'd go with the Fuji S2. My beef with the D70 is that it is 100% plastic. The S2 is sweet and would take a lot of punishment.
I repect Canon. They make a good product but if you've got Nikor lenses the S2 is nice.

I appreciate the replys.
Chinstrap...the S2 and new S3 look very promising. With the requirement for only AA batteries in the S3, it is even more appealing.
Jacko...I have to admit that feature for feature and dollar for dollar, the 10D is the top contender for anyone with a canon stable of lenses.
JoelHSmith....thanks for your insight.
Patents4u......good link, thanks.
Currently have side by side comparison's of the D70, EOS 10D, D100, Fuji S2, and the Kodak 14n (have crossed off the D1x). Obviously the F mount has a role in my decision. The 10D and 14n both have CMOS sensors with Kodak using a 24x36mm size (like the 1Ds). The rest use CCD image sensors. The S2, 14n and 10D have ISO 100 ability. The D100 and S2 have the TIFF image format option. The 10D has the most comprehensive software package included.
Again thanks for the input.

There might be something else for you to think about before you make your decision regarding the cameras that you have chosen. In the first instance the software package that you get with your camera makes very little difference, I say this because most of the software will probably never be used, the only useful software that you might get would be Photoshop elements if you don't already have an image editing package.
The second point is that the 14n from Kodak is not a particularly good camera in many different ways, including that it suffers quite badly from both noise and moire. The Kodak is also significantly more expensive than the other cameras that you have listed.
Of the cameras that you have listed the s2 seems to fit your needs the best. I am not too sure about the feature set of the s3, but the s2 will drop in price once that the s3 is launched.
Canon and definitely the biggest of the big boys in the digital market right now, and if you do decide to switch than the sooner the better -- but there is very little between Canon and Nikon in most ways. |
