I put up a photo on JPG magazine for the transportation theme --waiting for the votes, but it's been up there almost two weeks and only has 5 views--which were from the first 5 minutes. So not even getting the exposure to see yeah / nay.

Is that typical? I've only done this a few times, but that was a while ago, and I don't recall seeing so few views.

So if you are a member and want to have a look and weigh in, it's here...

Thanks!

Beautiful image, Neil. I'm a member over there as well and I just don't get how it works. I've looked through some portfolios where what looks like a snapshot has 300+ views and a gazillion comments. Although there is also some wonderful photography, it really seems to be much more of a popularity contest, with members racking up views/comments by just adding everyone as a contact.

Thanks. I am hoping some views and votes from DPC (the "DPC Bump") would put it in the Hot list, so someone notices it!

Otherwise, it looks like it's buried in a pile where no one looks!

If the DPC bump doesn't work, I might try to change the image to another image...then back...so it's new...and try to catch a busy period. Anyone ever tried that?

Well, I need to decide later if I want to register with yet another site, but in the meantime I was intrigued by this provision in the TOS, in which you agree to not upload any content which ...

"ΓΆ€ΒΆ impersonates any person or entity without his, her or its express written consent"

... and I was wondering how Shannon would go about getting permission to submit ... can the Brooklyn Bridge sign a property release?

Beautiful photo!! Perfect for the subject of transportation. I used a "spotlight" for you. I had 10 I could use. I am curious if it makes a difference. Good luck. Hope it becomes a "hot" photo

From JPG:
"What is Spotlight?
Spotlight is a new service we're offering whereby members can purchase premium placement of their ΓΆ€” or other members' ΓΆ€” photos. Photos that you elect to Spotlight will appear in various promotional spaces throughout jpgmag.com, and will appear 500 times. Each spotlight costs $1.00 (USD)."

More here.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There are tens of thousand entries and yes, it's easy to get lost! I had a photo published years ago, but a lot has changed since then. JPG was bought out by another company and you can see from the above statement how they might be generating some income. :)

I never heard of it until a few minutes ago...but it's a great idea. Thank you very much! We'll see how it works.

Update...

For those (including me) interested in how to garner interest on JPG, here are the spotlight results so far.

# of Times Shown: 1303
# of Clicks: 42
Click-through Ratio: 3.2%
Date Activated: 6 October 2010

Seems like a low click through ratio, though I don't have anything to compare it to. But in the last two days, it's picked up at least 4 favorites and votes, so maybe things are picking up? And I'm glad to see the spotlight is still active anyway...I thought it might end at 500 times shown.

Interestingly, I have almost as many favorites as votes.

Lost Souls
90 views
16 "Yeah!" votes

So I'm not making it to the "hot" screen yet :)

If anyone else wants to check it out and vote if you think its good for transportation, here's the link again:

I see I'll have some normative comparison data soon...thanks Keith for the spotlights on two of my other photos. They aren't active in voting, but definitely generating more looks at my small portfolio there!

I was wondering who spotlighted those--it doesn't tell you right away, but today I got an email status report and it did.

I voted on the one but no spotlight as I may try and enter a few :)

Geez, Chrome gave me a malware detected warning "The website at jpgmag.com contains elements from the site admanagementservices.org, which appears to host malware ΓΆ€“ software that can hurt your computer or otherwise operate without your consent. Just visiting a site that contains malware can infect your computer." So I ran away like a scared little girl.

That's weird...I use Chrome, and I've never seen such a warning. Was the warning from WOT?

I just checked, both from your posted link, then from my current open account link, using Google/Safari, and got the same type warning message.

I just tried it from the Mac and saw the message...perhaps I'm not getting it from my PC because I'm logged in? Or maybe Google doesn't check anymore because I have it bookmarked, or visited it a number of times.

Basically, from the Google safebrowsing diangosis, it looks like someone "somewhere" on the site has loaded something bad.

By the way, I didn't have a link to it on the Mac, and I guessed the URL as "jpeg.com". That's a picture site, but of a very different variety, LOL.

You generally need somewhere in the vicinity of 20 favs to get onto the hot list.

The spotlight feature is immensely valuable at getting your shot viewed more often.

I've been on JPG Mag for about three and a half years, and though it seems pretty decent, it's often hard to tell what trips the voters' triggers.....

I voted, tagged it as a fav, and left a comment. Just patronizing though, since I'm not really a fan of trains, and moody stuff.......8>)

Keith wingyisleeds very kindly gave me a couple of spotlights on the 19th. They were for older shots, and so they already had a number of views.

That was two days ago (well, three I guess, but really about 48 hours). The spotlight, according to the site, has already ended!

Here are my spotlight statistics.

Shown---Clicks---%------Start Date
1883------9------0.5%------19 October 2010
2399------8------0.3%------19 October 2010
1500-----45------3.0%-------6 October 2010

Why did those end so quickly, and the original, lasted a week or two? Could it be a bug? Or did they somehow get a lot of showings so quickly (and very little click through!)
