This year, for my sweetie's b-day, I gave him a Richard Pety adventure - he gets to drive around the Pomona Speedway race track in a race car. Lots of fun but I want to take pictures and my zoom maxes out at 270mm. I'm thinking of renting a lens for that day, and am wondering what you sports photogs would recommend. It would obviously have to be for Nikon. Is 1,000mm just way overkill (I don't know where I'll be placed in relation to the beginning/finish line). Can I get away with something a little less beastly, like a 500 or 600?

DO you know if you will be on the infield or in the stands?

My step dad did the experience(in Daytona) and my Mom was right next to him when he got into the car. But to shoot where he would be passing was about 200 yard away.

I really don't know. Would the lens change depending on where I'm shooting from? I can find out, but my gut tells me I'll be in the stands. I have a feeling it'll be like Eagle40Fox2's experience.

I would say call and ask them about it. If you will be on pit lane or in the stands. And ask an estimate of how far you will be from where you are standing to the track. This will give you a better idea of what you will need.

ETA: Pit lane on oval tracks is usually right in front of the start/finish line.

Thanks for that link, kleski. I actually shot at the winter quarter finals and have a pretty good idea of HOW to do it:

Just wanted to make sure I had the right lens for this particular event.
