Does anyone know when the transition to color film happened? Around what year did the typical family start using color? (I assume it was pricey to begin with and that it took awhile to get into the main stream -- but that's just a guess.)

Amateur Color Photography began to gain significant popularity in the 1950's, to the best of my knowledge. Here's a timeline on the development of color photography:
