So a friend of my wife is getting married tomorrow and their photographer dropped out this morning. Apparently it was just a "friend with a nice camera". Well I'm taking their place. Does anyone have any advice for me? I've never shot a wedding before. They aren't expecting (or paying) much but they are paying. I want it to turn out as good as possible for them. I'm going to get to the venue early and do some test shots and hopefully talk to someone so I have a better idea of what they want.

Does anyone have a good resource (either online or that I could pick up from barnes and nobel in the morning) for standard wedding poses. Something I can look at with them so we can be on the same page.

I'm planning on picking up a simple diffuser for my pop up flash. Other than that is there anything relatively inexpensive you would recommend I pick up?

I know these circumstances are far less than ideal but I think things will be pretty relaxed (as far as weddings go) and we'll just be able to have fun with it.

Thanks for any help

I know he's done webinars, but I don't know whether they are readily available, nor can I attest to their quality. The book is great, though. I got it from our city library, but it'd be worth a purchase and I never have shot any weddings (and I don't plan to.)

I think you might want to invest in a hotshoe flash that supports bounce. Better yet, get a cable to put it off camera on a bracket too.

Shooting the indoor portion of a wedding or reception with the popup flash is asking for problems, IMHO.

When I was in college, a long time ago, a friend asked me to shoot his wedding, and I agreed--but only if he bought me an external flash unit (since I didn't have one). So maybe you can work out a deal with him?

I must reiterate Neil's recommendation of a hotshoe flash. Even if you just rent one for a day, it will help immensely. I was recently at a family wedding where the official photographer was using the on camera flash. I had my camera, so I grabbed a number with my hotshoe flash. After comparing the shots, there is no way to do this type of event justice without it. All my shots were naturally lit and captured the mood, while the others were flat and poorly exposed.

Another tip would be to get in close. Bring a long zoom if you have one, so you can get the candids. My favorite photos from that wedding were when the people didn't know I grabbed the shot. I'm no expert in people photography, so I'm sure much can be improved upon what I did, but here's a selection of those I took:

Third the recommendation for hot-shoe flash; it's indispensable. For the bounce capabilities, at a minimum. I did a wedding a few years ago where the friend bought me a 430EX to use; Juliet later bought that from me. But it was adequate to the job.

Agree wholeheartedly with the advice regarding a hotshoe flash. But avoid the bracket like the plague - big, cumbersome and no need for it to be honest.
