can someone explain to me, a newbie. what the different styles of lens hoods do?

I see short ones , long ones, petal shaped. whats the difference?

The designs are almost always lens-specific: maximize shading of the lens without being in the image.

So shorter hoods are for wider angle lenses, for example. Petal shaped lens hoods take advantage of the fact that the image & sensor is not round, but rectangular: since the vertical dimension is smaller, the upper and lower sections of the hood can be longer.

In my view camera days, I just took my hat off and held it in the right spot :-)

so if i have a 18-55 and 50-250 i would get one of each? and ignore the petal? or will i get some sort of benefit form the petal?

I think you have to get the lens hood specifically for your lens, you can't pick and choose.

i found a couple of hoods, all shapes that fit my lenses, which is where my question is coming from.

so it might well be possible to find any number of hoods that will thread onto a given lens, but that, in and of itself, is not a "fit" since two lenses can have the same diameter threaded filter mounts, but be substantially different focal lengths. the link wingyisleeds posted is really useful, btw....

The lens hood from my 70-300 lens fits my Fuji HS10 camera though vignettes quite a bit at the wide end.

Having said that, a hood made for a long lens will almost 100% of the time vignette at the widest focal length of a wide angle lens.

That is sooo cool!!

Just echoing what everyone else has said, you need the right hood for the lens otherwise you will get vignetting.

If there is a petal hood and a non petal hood that are both recommended for the specific lens the petal hood will work better at blocking the sun spots as it will come out further on the top and bottom, a normal hood will only cover the max distance on the sides.

Go to the printable hoods site and you can print them and see the difference :)
