Soo, I havent been on in a LONG time. I have been busting my butt working 4 jobs and building up my savings to buy the camera I want. I really want to have a full frame body since I have been shooting weddings and Senior portraits. I currently have enough to buy a D700, but am halfway to the D3s. Im not really into the video part of a DSLR, but the D3s will offer me the abolty to get to 11 FPS. Since I also shoot a boatload of sports...Do I keep saving? I'm not planning on getting rid of the D300, as it does offer me 8FPS, and will make a great back up. I am wondering, do I jump and get the D700, use it primarily for the Portraits and weddings, and continue to use the D300 for sports and Back-up? Do I keep saving and just get the D3s which will give more speed and full frame and have the best of both worlds? I know 8fps is great, but I also do a ton of gymnastics, so an additional 3 fps "might?" make a differnece....
Opinions would be appreciated...No, Im not switching to Canon, I would have to take a 5th job to switch everything over. Just looking for some friendly advice and guidance. |

| Im in a similar situation in that I am looking to upgrade my D200. I am going to wait a few months though, because Nikon is due to release the successor to the D700, and I want to see what that is before I make a decision. |

I was in the same situation a couple of months ago. I finally decided to go with the D700 and keep the D300 and assorted lenses. I wanted full frame for some nature shots, but with the D300 keep the extra reach when situation arises. Also, I considered that if a new body comes out soon, and it fits what I want, I can sell both bodies to buy the new one? If that makes sense? :)
ETA: Also, I didn't want to pay out twice as much for the D3s and still have 12mp FX and 5mp DX.

Funny.... I kinda gave up shooting challenges, I guess. I could NEVER seem to please "the people". My scores are average, but thats ok. I shoot and post what I LOVE, and not please anyone else. One of these days, maybe I might get there. In the mean time I will shoot for enjoyment, and not a score.
Canon is just not an option, I have Too much invested in my equipment. I might wait to see whats up Nikons sleeve. The D3s is Backordered EVERYWHERE except on Ebay. |

| Yeah, Really Kind of leaning that way. Now I'm wondering If I should wait a month or so and see what Nikon comes out with. I dont have any weddings or portrait sessions lined up right now...but I have worked soo hard and I can get a brand new one for under 2K right now. |

As I said earlier in the thread, buy the D700 and if Nikon announce a new camera later, sell D700 & D300 to buy the new body. |

| Or just keep the D700. It's the best camera I've ever owned. And it'll be the same story tomorrow. And the day after that. |

I'm shooting a lot of high school football in low light these days. I'm finding that the D300 gets really noisy with an ISO of 1600 and higher which I need If I don't use a flash.
I happened to notice a pro (I'm just a Dad with a hobby problem) shooting one of the games I was at and he was shooting a D3 with a Nikkor 400mm f/2.8G ED VR I checked out his shots afterward and I was amazed at the lack of noise in his photos. I asked another pro about this and he said the D3 was made for low light and that it can handle ISOs very well up to something unGodly like 6400.
I have no idea if the D700 fits into the same category in that regard or not.
Regardless, as much as I loved seeing the ability of that D3's stuff in low light, there is no way I can do a D3 any time soon unless I win the lottery. Same with the D700 |

I totally agree with your statement above. I personally compare D3s(friend) and D300(mine) in low light at ISO1000. both bodies uses same lense and almost same setting. D3s produces less noise and brighter image. On top of that, D3s focusing speed is like 3-4 times faster. All and all, if you could hold your breath, work harder, save harder, go all the way for D3s. All i can say D3s IQ rockz!

| Ordering my D700 today. I thank everyone for their feedback. I went and talked to a friend who is a professional wedding photographer in the next town over. He and his wife have been featured my times in the Professional Photographer magazine. He shoots the D700 (he has 3 of them). He absolutely loves this camera. It seems like a more realistic route for my budget at this time. Thanks again for the advice. |

I use the D3 and the D300 and enjoy them both for different reasons. The low light attributes of the D3 are amazing. The D300 gives my longer lenses the extra magnification that I desire. So, I have the best of both worlds.
Most user expect the D3 and the D700 to be replaced within one year from now. So, I recommend the lower cost route with the D700, since the D3 will devalue much further from a dollars and cents point of view. The losses will be less with the D700 in my view, even if the percentages are the same.
Both are great cameras, so whichever model you select, I expect that you will be delighted with your decision. Have fun.
