Flattens out the shadows. The result is much more evenly exposed.

Here is a fairly good example where the new iPhone HDR feature can be helpful. The tiny camera sensors have very little dynamic range, so three shots bracketed can really make up for that deficiency (if the situation calls for it).
No arty shots here and zero processing save for resizing. But you can clearly see the difference HDR made in this instance. The phone takes 3 shots very rapidly and then spits out a single (middle) exposure and an HDR exposure of all three captures combined after it (as you see here). As Louis explained it takes just a few seconds for all this to happen.

Edit: I should add that most of the time I don't even want to use the flat HDR image. It's a nice feature to have, but only once in a while. So those who can't use it on the phone they have shouldn't feel so bad about that fact :)

It seems as though the participation is slowing down. Come on people!! We have a week left. I've enjoyed this more than you know. Thanks again to salmiakki for starting it.

I second the thanks. It has been, is being, the most enjoyable month ... mind you I'm artistically exhausted now - there's simply no rest when the entire production suite from camera to finished article is in your pocket :-/

Agreed. And a lot of the time, the result is less than spectacular. As you can see from his comparison shots, the less exposed areas are much more interesting in the non HDR version. I've found that the best results are in a situation where more exposed parts are tempered, as in a forest, where most of the scene is moderately exposed with bright horizontal spots at the top, or a landscape with a lot of cloud. In those instances, the HDR seems to work best. As I've pointed out, it can also be useful just to smooth out shadows in regular scenes like the leaf, or a portrait of someone -- but definitely useless in a more dramatic portrait like this.

Yes, many thanks to Sarah for starting this side challenge. The regular DPC hasn't been the same since the DPL2 ended. With participation down there, I haven't felt the incentive to participate much :( So this phone stuff has helped me to remain creative on a daily basis, it's been fun, and I have learned a lot too. I'm still looking forward to the rest of the month!

Brent, with Hipstamatic, do you have to select the lens and film before shooting, or is it all post processing?
