Could somebody please put these in order of worst to best. (In your opinion).

I'm only buying for a hobby and it's my first slr.

Nikon D90
Nikon D3000
Nikon d5000
Canon eos 100d
Canon eos 400d
Canon eos 450d
Canon eos 30d
Canon eos 50d

Thanks a lot.

No Nikon D40? That's a great entry-level dslr. I test-drove a 20D before deciding to stay with Nikon and got the D90. If I went Canon, anything less than the 5D would feel like I was going backwards.

I thought the price tags did that for us.

That's pretty subjective. I'd be partial to the Canon XSi (450D), since it was my first dSLR. Here are the years these various models were released...if that helps at all.

Nikon D90 - October 2008
Nikon D3000 - December 2009
Nikon D5000 - June 2009
Canon EOS 1000D - July 2008 (I assume this is the one you meant, there was no 100D)
Canon EOS 400D - October 2006
Canon EOS 450D - May 2008
Canon EOS 30D - April 2006
Canon EOS 50D - October 2008

edit
: at least, this is the month/date the model was reviewed on another digital-photography related website.

thanks david, that helps a lot. I've been swaying towards the 450d.

Are the 30,40,50d's especially made to be harder wearing than the others?

Yes, the Rebel series (xxxD) are made with a molded plastic body, whereas the 30, 40 and 50D were made with a magnesium alloy meant to be more resistant to the elements. Remember, a big part of choosing a body brand will be your budget for lenses, especially down the road. Advice: go to a camera store where you can handle these cameras and fire off a few test shots...see how they feel in your hands, whether you like the menu system, viewfinder, etc. Then look for a good deal on a used body.

Both Nikon and Canon have a great lineup of cameras and lenses. I might suggest you take a look at some of them in person and see which feels most comfortable in your hands.
I see you listed the Nikon D90. They just announced the replacement/ upgrade the D7000. It may be a couple of months before it hits the stores but you may take a look at it as well. Size and shape will be about the same as the D90. I can't say on the Canon cameras but the lower ones like the D3000 and D5000 do not have an internal motor for autofocus on lenses so if a lens does not have its own focus motor you will have to focus that lens by hand (not sure if this is a concern or not- for some it may be, for others not- secondary lenses or older model lenses are less costly but may not include the motor).
