It was a happy accident of the clouds breaking directly above, which you can see in the photo near the top. The road, made of crushed white gravel, was illuminated by the early evening light that streamed through. Highlight curves in Lightroom brought out the brightness.

These clouds were truly spectacular, and I've never seen them before. Behind me vis-a-vis this photo, there were hundreds of "mare's tails" clouds, those wispy straight stratus clouds that are curved up at one end. The clouds in the picture looked like they were breaking apart and becoming all those mare's tails.
