This is mainly for those who shoot people...but it travel quite often and I'm finding it harder and harder to find shooting locations especially shooting with models. How in the world when you travel are you to find the idea shooting locations when you have never been to that place before??
On a side note...anyone in Kansas City new of good shooting locations? |

Google Earth... Learn to use it and (unless, like me you go for stupid-remote spots) you should be able to find what you need (as long as you're looking for natural light stuff... Otherwise, I have no clue).
The street view functionality is absolutely wonderful, I feel like I can go anywhere and be familiar with the area, and more-so, I can determine if I want to go to an area before I travel there, which, naturally, saves me a sh*tload of time. |

Google earth and Panoramio give you a good summary of what's out there. You'll see the popular stuff but might come across a hidden gem. It's better than nothing and I use it a ton before going to new locations to shoot. |

I always Google it, then go to popular places, then Google sights, out of the way places, then Google walk abouts, I Google the heck out of a town or place I go, then decide. Then hit MM |

I often look on Flickr to see what others are photographing. This might help as well. Someone has created maps from geotagged Flickr images showing what areas are being photographed by locals vs out of towners.
Here's Kansas City

I goog... oh never mind...
I bought a GPS tracker so I know where exactly I get lost. I should take pictures of the tracking maps, lots of crop circle activity by me as in going round and round... :)

That's pretty much what I do anyways. Just that Google maps isn't always accurate. It sucks becuase sometimes you don't have the ability to go out and scout the location before the shoot. Guess I just have to get better at reading google.
Google also doesn't show you caves, abandoned warehouses and stuff like that. |
