They could still enter all the other challenges, but I think restricted challenges would certainly be a step in the right direction - you may even find new community of new users forming as a result. Maybe make these challenges more technique orientated (rule of thirds, natural light etc) you could also rotate them every 6 months so you wouldn`t have to rack your brains thinking up new challenges. New users could be made aware of these special challenges at the point of registration?

Simms, I thought your post was right on the mark.
Your suggestion made me think of something though. I think that instead of an HM going to the 4th and 5th best scores, it might be better to give an HM to the highest scoring first entry, and another HM to the person who scored highest above their own average (if they have a minimum of 10 entries).
Just a thought. |

I thought they were meaning "early DPC" members that had drifted away and come back when referencing OLD DPC MEMBERS. |

I wonder if any of you have any contact to any editor for any of the big magazines such as Shutterbug, so maybe we could send an article and some samples? Crazy idea? |

If you want to give ribbons to new arrivals with specific rules just for them then I suggest different coloured ribbons than the ones given out now. I don't want my blue to be equated to a blue that was won with special rules. I earned mine through hard work and my passion for photography. I didn't ask for any special rules so I could win a ribbon. I'm all for equality and I'm all for everyone having ribbons on their profile page but they need to be achieved with the rules already in place and that everyone abides to.

Disclaimer: I do not have a DPC ribbon, so there is the chance that I would feel differently if I had one.
I agree that any such ribbons for newbies or whatever should be different. (Rookie of the whatever kind of thing.) That being said, I really don't care if they are not different. I do have a Posthumous ribbon that I treasure greatly. However, if Don wanted to award one to everyone on the site, it does not diminish my image, or my work. My images are mine, and I have a pretty fair idea of exactly how good they are. (Not as good as I would like.) What somebody else does, has, or gets, in no way makes an image of mine any better or any worse.
If I was here for the DPC ribbons, it would have been a very sad eight years...

No. But I would think differently about this site's pandering to ribbon whores.
Did I just say that? :) |

I think it would bother me quite a bit too...
Those who have ribbons earned them. I may or may not like all the ribbon winning shots on this site, but I do respect that the winners had the skill and knowledge about the voters to achieve them.

I evangelize for DPC whenever I meet someone who really wants to improve their photography. I have loved this site for several years now and I'm positive I visit it more often than any other site.
I think the site could benefit from some upgrades and consistency (to put it kindly, I feel like the improvements have been very limited considering the huge base of users):
ΓΆ€ΒΆ make a mobile app and/or make the site mobile-user friendly. This will allow DPC'rs to easilly show their DPC portfolio on the go and can only make the DPC community more connected. Maybe make uploads easier and have special challenges with a mobile device requirement and / or max ppi requirement or something fun.
ΓΆ€ΒΆ DPC prints: Make it better or get rid of it. Merge with smugMug or something. Huge potential basically wasted.
ΓΆ€ΒΆ Reward photographers for sticking around and submitting, commenting. I suppose the community itself tends to bestow ribbons and the like on good commenters, but maybe something more formal.
ΓΆ€ΒΆ Be a little more consistent with extra challenges (other than monthly free studies):
The master's free study is a good example ΓΆ€Β¦ do they exist any more? Who is a Master now? Maybe you get a "Master" icon if you hit certain criteria (to be decided by users)? Maybe that is cheesey. I'm just rambling now ;)

I agree with my fearless leader. DPC is always the first thing I throw out to people who want to develop, as well. The thing about DPC that's interesting is that the majority of the perks and aspects that make it great are created, carried out by, and supported, by the member base. While I find this very encouraging and awesome, I'm left wondering how this can be supported more effectively by the site itself.
I'm not sure I agree with "special" ribbons either. It reminds me of my experience coaching basketball for elementary students. Here, we aren't allowed to keep score (no, I'm not making this up) because we don't want kids to lose their self esteem. As a coach, and as the individual who is supposed to impart my players with a sense of sportsmanship (which revolves around accepting defeat and working for future success) as well as skill in the sport, I am not allowed to gauge their effectiveness. Should we all have ribbons? No, that would defeat the point of them. |

These are all brilliant suggestions but have all been mentioned many times before and we get no answer from the owners of the site on these matters. Its like the owners really don`t give a toss about the site anymore and they are more than happy to collect the subs from the paying members and leave everything as it is. Would it really be too much out of Langdons schedule to pop in here five or six times a year and say what plans (if any) he has for the future?? Maybe he has had enough and is planning on selling the site? Who knows. So Langdon - are you upto the challenge and fancy popping in here and telling us what direction DPC will be going in?? |

I totally agree. Let's get together and buy him out and make this place a better place. I too feel this place has been abandoned and Langdon just piles the money in his account thinking, go ahead suckers, keep squabbling over forum colours, voting trends, voting, voting, voting etc etc. This place stinks because of it. When was the last time he came in here to announce....anything? DPL in March, after we constantly asked for some news and he posted one or two messages and off he was...doing nothing for this site.
I say we all lapse out our subscriptions until Mr. Langdon comes out and speaks to his members about where and what this site is going/doing. Mine is up in Oct and I'm letting it lapse just because I feel this site is old and mundane, boring and fad, empty of life. If it weren't for the members this site would be off my radar. |

I don`t think that's his attitude, and I reckon that once costs etc are met for the site then he doesn't make a killing on it. and I am sure he doesn`t think of us as `suckers` - I think its more of a case its a fad that he has grown bored with - remember that when he started this site he was a young guy, single and the internet was really getting going - now he is married, I think he runs his own development business (I think) and this site probably takes care of itself - well, with the unpaid help of the site council.
You know, I am probably being massively unfair with my suppositions of Langdons day to day involvement, I really don't know, but what I do know is that to us, the casual observers, its does seem like he does'nt care about the site moving forward. I would love for him to show his colours on here and prove me wrong!! |

A well designed and put together engine with good oil and gas needs only one start. Whoever starts the engine (or what, such as starter) doesn't need to crank it again until it stops.
This site is running fine but need some oil and gas (advertisement, either mouth to mouth or published) to continue, which are seem like running low. Little body paint wouldn't hurt but I am ok the way it is.
As long as the engine runs (site runs successfully with good enough members) I don't think we need to see Langdon's face at all... he is taking care of stuff behind the monitor anyways.
Unpaid SCs... I am sure we can find many other "trusted" members to volunteer, it's kind of an honor if you ask me (for some, it's a job, but I disagree). Unless this website becomes a corporation like Google, I am pretty sure SC status will be the same.
So, it is a good running website producing tons of good products to us (good photos), and encourage us to take more photos... all we have to do is to mention it to the others to join. I see it as a unique idea, having 3 to 4 challenges per week (with many rules attached, and I think some more should be added). |
