A comment on my most recent:
Originally posted by tanguera: I understood half of what you did. Split tone??? |
Split toning involves giving the shadows in an image one tone, and the highlights another. It can often create dramatic results, especially if contrasting colours are used. My usual procedure is to tint the shadows a grey blue, and the highlights a tan yellow. It's an old film procedure that I believe was intended for use strictly with black and white, but of course digital will let you split tone a colour image. The results in a colour image are not as dramatic. |

Great, thanks for explaining. But since I'm still learning PS, what do you do to select the shadows/highlights? |

I use Lightroom for split toning, which has a special panel to select the tone of shadows and highlights. Here's a good tutorial that can help you do it in Photoshop. You can use its Color Balance sliders to get the split tone effect.

I heard about the Picture Show application from Sarah ( salmiakki) and it is indeed a good one- so many variations possible! |

We should try and compile a list of the apps used (Did I just volunteer?) as there have been so many it maybe hard to keep track of them. I know most of them are just gimmicks, but I think that's half the fun.
One useful little app I stumbled upon, is from the Gorillapod gurus, Joby, Gorillacam. Haven't played much, but it has a spirit level, which I think is really handy for keeping those horizons straight. It's pretty cheap too (as in free!). I suppose it's an iphone only app right now, but .... |

I think you did. Just like when I suggested a Dallas-FW GTG a few weeks back. By suggesting it, I was also volunteering to plan and execute.
Once we compile a list I can post them in the freebie software thread. Maybe keep Android and iPhone lists separate? |

One of the many fun things about this side challenge Sarah is learning about the various phone apps available. Gorillacam looks great (good find!) and has some very useful features. I wish it had a "touch to focus" feature, but maybe they will add that at some point... |

Yeah, I was kinda joking. I fully intended to do this from the start. And I'll definitely keep separate lists. I think I may use the original thread suggesting the SC, rather than creating a new one and then I won't clog this thread up either. |

It's inconceivable to consider I was messing around with the phone when I was at work, right? :) Some lovely sunlight streaming through the blinds onto my desk. |

My phone fell *sigh* Black screen of death has taken over *sigh*
My old one has fallen over a gazillion times over and it works like a pro.. maybe I should stick to more basic phones that aren't built like china. |

Apple has released iOS 4.1 which adds "HDR" ability to the iPhone 4 camera.
I dismissed this feature when it was announced as I figured it would just generate the "clown vomit" HDR shots I don't care for myself. But I have installed it and it appears to be more like a mild exposure bracketing done of the three shots it quickly takes. No good for standard situations, but maybe very useful for high dynamic range setting. I'm looking forward to trying it out some more. |

You must have gotten the same weather we had yesterday morning. I got drenched on the way into work, road was flooded in a number of places. It finally broke up and I got some dramatic clouds in the early evening, about the same time you posted. How convenient for the upcoming challenge. |
