Actually I'm surprised this did as badly as it did. No appreciation. 22 fours? By no means is it fantastic in any sense I know, and I couldn't even come up with a more pleasing title but it's certainly different and more deserving imo then the final score and placing it got especially looking at some of the images that placed higher then mine. It's like most voters have a preconceived and set idea of the sort of image they expect to see and if it deviates from that idea it gets slammed.

Edited to correct spelling errors.

Ps. Or maybe it's just that when I give score to images in the challenges I do so much too liberally. Possibly I should revise the way I hand out scores. If this had been someone else's entry and I was to give it a score I would have probably given it a 6. I feel the image should have ended with an average score between around 5.3 to 5.5 in this challenge.

I'm surprised that you did that badly, too. I like your image - it makes me think of the impressionists, Van Gogh, too, actually - and I gave you an 8.

Free studies are tough. Your image feels much like a painting, albeit very realistic. It immediately reminded me of a pic I would see in a Jr. High text book in a chapter discussing the textile industry in Europe. Not that there's anything wrong with that. I think what it's really got going against it is simply the subject. Without some meaningful context or STUNNING night shot type WOW factor, industrial scenes are just not appreciated much. As far as comparing it with where other images placed - I have found that to be a frustrating waste of energy. Voters are not comparing entries side by side or ranking them against each other on an individual voting basis, so it doesn't mean much, IMO.

Hope that helps.

I left a comment at the image.

Just some honest feedback on an otherwise well-executed photo.

Overall, the image feels a tad over-exposed. I'm seeing almost no areas of black and the sky is a bit too light.

Composition is a bit weak. The crane, which I assume is the center of focus is dead center in the photo. Not a strong position for it. Dynamic balance of the photo (think balancing a scale) would be much better with the photo cut off right behind the barge.

It may be a tad on the over-sharpened side.

My image came 320/359(rather lower than I would have liked but fair enough given the excellent images in this round ... after all it is a rather un-remarkable piccy of a horse (albeit nicely coloured, sharp imho).

I've been away from DP for sometime and coming back recently I was struck by the increase in the overall quality of the images (and lets face it DP has been a bastion of superb images for years) and I rather feel that 4.9 for 320th reflects this.

i saw your shot now (i do not voted all the photos in this challenge), and i agree with fotomann_forever, he has wrote exactly my impressions, word per word. If i should vote today for this photograph, i would give a 6.

I wanted to illustrate to some of those who commented about the composition. I went to a lot of effort to get this shot even with disregard to my own safety actually.
It is very difficult to get a good shot of this concrete plant because it is situated on the banks of a canal and the only way to get a shot is to cross a two lane highway on foot (illegal activity) and in the process you have to skirt 4 rows of metal crash barriers to get to the opposite bank. There is only one spot from which to take a half decent shot once you reach the other side because the entire opposite bank is covered by high reeds growing on a steep slope right down to the waters edge. I managed to find just one spot where there was a bit of a clearing from which I could get an unobstructed view. So in the circumstances I got the best composition possible. If I had a boat I would have been able to do better. As it is the area around where I live does not offer much in the way of exciting wow compositions and scenery so I find I really have to hunt down and chase even what most others would consider mundane and boring places to capture anything for entering on DPC.
Here is a google map of the place where I took this photo. Just to illustrate the difficulty and restrictions I had to overcome. The black arrow shows the spot from where I took the photo. You can see the 2 lane highway I had to cross negotiating heavy late afternoon rush hour traffic. You can also see the sweep of view I had from there to get the shot. I illustrated this sweep with a triangular line.

Regards
Fred

You should've entered a photo of you getting that shot OR titled it "You wouldn't believe what I went through to get this shot!" and go for the empathy votes. :P

Yep...you got a point :) Especially since I had one leg in plaster at the time and was on crutches. :)
