I'm using the camera flash on the 7D to remotely trigger the 580EX.
I don't seem to be able to have the 580EX do a high speed sync, even though the on-camera flash is only being used to trigger, not to actually flash.
Am I doing something wrong, or can't remote flashes do high speed sync? If so, what do I do if I'm doing an outdoor wedding (besides curse and sweat?)

| The built in wireless trigger cannot do high speed sync. You can do it with the 580 as the master and another (or 430,420) as a slave. |

Yeah... Need better flash control = need a Nikon :-(
The 7D is a BIG step in reducing the gap but 2nd curtain and HSS are not on the list for this current bit of hardware.... Maybe next upgrade. |

Hi Wendy,
This is subject I was very interested in lately, the HSS, Hyper Sync Speed, which would allow you to sync your flashes to virtually the maximum shutter speed,
In order for you to do that, you would need either
1- PocketWizard MiniTT1-Canon/Flex, or
2- RadioPopper the Jrx system.
I was more to go with the PW, but it seems they have a problem with Canon flashes. So I will be going with RadioPopper.
I selected RP based on many factors, first the amazing durability and the distance coverage '' PW has issues with canon flashes ''. RP is not camera bases, there is nothing like RP for Canon or RP for Nikon. RP allows you also to add manual strobes, Alienbees strobes and third party flashes '' Which PW doesn't ''.
You can google Canon HSS and you will find tons or articles and comparisons. Lastly, you might need to note that this system would allow you also to ETTL, which are the main plus it has.
Having all these functions doesn't come without an equal cost. It is expensive .. but you get what you pay for.
I started with Ebay chepos but got rid of them in couple of weeks, moved to Alienbees Sybercyncs which are amazing, but now I am caught at its limitation. Been researching this for almost a month now, and I'd vote for RadioPopper.
I hope this would help,
All the best,

Only with 580EXII`s and the US version of the Pocket Wizards. The Euro version which use a different radio frequency are immune from the interference issue.

PW actually has adapters for a number of studio flashes including Alienbees and Elinchrom. Combine these with the AC3 ZoneController and you can adjust the power of the flashes from your camera as well as triggering them. There is some radio noise emitted by certain canon flashes that can interfere with the radio signal, but there are solutions for that problem. The AC7 shield blocks the radio noise and is actually a fantastic umbrella adapter. The design keeps the flash very close to the shaft so it works great with brolly boxes and other modifiers that wrap around the flash.
I'm not saying the RadioPoppers aren't a great product, but there was a bit more to tell on the pocketwizard side of the discussion.
