I'm new to SLR's and was wondering what the difference was from a bog standard 4gb Sandisk

Write speed.

If your camera is good at rapid shooting, then your card might not be fast enough to keep up. But, since you're asking this question in the first place, I kinda doubt you have an issue with that, although I have no idea what your frame rate is.. If it's over 4 or 5 FPS, you might consider an upgrade..

That answers my question perfectly. Thanks.

I have one flashcard without any speed rating on it. When shooting, I really don't see a difference as I am mostly doing one shot at a time, but I notice it when copying the pics over to the computer. My other Cf cards have ratings of 133x and 266x. They can copy 8Gig over to the computer in a matter of minutes, while the unrated card will take an hour or more.

The cheaper card is rated class 2 and the more expensive card is rated class 10
You need Class 4 or 6 minimum to record full HD video on the latest Canon DSLR's. Of course the higher class cards will write and read images faster to and from the card.

* Class 2: 8 MB/s
* Class 4: 15 MB/s
* Class 6: 20 MB/s
* Class 10: 30 MB/s
