Is there a shot counter in the D80 and D90?
I like keeping the original shot number as part of the file name but on my vacation I used a new rename filter I set up on my new laptop, and didn't realize I messed it up and lost the counter in the file name.
I figured out how to rename from a given sequence number, but I was wondering if the original number was there in metadata (EXIF or otherwise)? And also if the camera will tell me how many shots fired, because I forget whether I've rolled over the 20K or 30K mark. I hate that they just don't allow enough digits that I have to keep track of that (and include the extra digit in my renaming template!)
So to recap the questions:
...is the number in the metadata?
...Does the camera keep track of the # of shots, and if so, how do I see it?
Thanks!

Never mind...I found it in the manufacturer's area of an image file...I found the field "shuttercount" on the D90, haven't looked at the 80 yet.
Ah, I also just found File Number (4 digits), which is what matches up with the original number in the file name. Too bad LR doesn't allow you to use this in a template!

On my Canon there is a field way at the end of the EXIF which has was appears to be a true image counter -- it has more numbers to increment each time my numbering rolls over at IMG_9999. Here is part of the EXIF from a typical shot -- I've highlighted the relevant fields:
File: - M:\00_Photo_Folders\1008_Aug_Photos\100801\IMG_3555.JPG
Make - Canon
Model - Canon PowerShot S3 IS
Image Type - IMG:PowerShot S3 IS JPEG
Image Number - 1053555
Owner Name - PMarcus©POB4653Berkeley,CA94704
I'm working on the fourth (or maybe fifth) "batch" of ten thousand shots, up to 3555 so far ...
