I need some advice on battery grips. I am currently looking at getting one for my 7D, prices vary from £30 for a generic to £148 for the Canon.
So my questions is - with the excellent battery life on the 7D are they worth getting and is it worth paying out the extra for the Canon?
Thanks
Mike

I had a Zeikos grip for my 5DII and the quality of it was just amazing. And it was less than half the price of the canon grip. I currently have a Canon grip for my 7D and the portrait shutter button is so touch I have it turned off. :( I'm going to send it to Canon and see if they can tone it down a little. If I had to do it all over again I'd buy another Zeikos grip.
There is more to adding a grip to a camera than just the added battery life. Balancing a long lens is so much easier with a grip and the portrait shutter button and controls make it worth it to me, even if I didn't add another battery to it.

My 7D's grip button is ok.... but it is more sensitive then the main one. Cannot speak to Zeiko as have not used it but IF you need something like an RRS or Kirk plate make sure it's the same shape... otherwise not an issue. The canon one is still nothing like a 1-series and still like a brick, maybe the 3rd party are better shaped, don't know.
A grip is so worth it.... I have a hand strap on and use that instead of a shoulder strap.... I need the extra space cause I have trouble holding a small camera - nothing to do with the extra battery or even the vertical shots cause I usually just twist my wrest anyway. It's so comfortable for me with the hand strap. |

A question a little off point - but I thought this was the best place to ask.
The LP-E6 battery for the 7D. Is this exactly the same battery used in the 5D ? I assume it is (logic would say an LP-E6 is a LP-E6 and they wouldn't have variations of it !)
But looking at ads - they either advertise the LP-E6 for the 5D or the LP-E6 for the 7D ! They never seem to advertise the LP-E6 for 5D AND 7D ?
Also - are the generic brans ok ? They seem to be half the price ?

| Battery for 20D -> 5D are the same and 5D2 and 7D are different from those (and a lot more $$ as seems to not be generics... at least not earlier in the year). |

| So - the battery is the same for the 7D and 5D2 - but not the 5D ? |

I have two questions about the Zeikos grip for the 7D.
I read in one review that it eats batteries; that you have to turn both the grip and the camera off (as opposed to power saving, I guess?) to prevent your batteries being drained. I have had several of the XXD line and the Canon grip for them, and never had that issue. Can anyone with the Zeikos grip tell me if the review was correct or not?
In another review, a consumer mentioned that the body wheel doesn't work when the Zeikos grip is on. Only the wheel on the Zeikos grip functions. Is that actually so?
I think either of these two issues would convince me to go ahead and fork over the extra $100 for the name brand. Hoping someone can tell me I won't need to do that :) |

I would say both of false statements. There is no function difference between the Zeikos grip and the Canon grip. |

| Well, I'm glad to hear that. I'm really on the fence about it. I've had the Canon grip for seven years, through four cameras, two OH NO! drops, and it's still very solid :) I'm nervous about buying something that I've had no experience with. |

Unless you just like adding a buttload of weight to your camera, I've never though battery grips were worth anything.
A brick and a piece of threaded metal are a lot more cost effective.

Really? I love the vertical grip. I leave it on my camera all the time. Plus a brick and a piece of wire wouldn't look nearly as professional ;) |
