Ok, I'm sitting on a good size chunk of money right now and I'm looking to get myself a better dslr. I kind of like the Canon EOS-550D Rebel T2i but I have had my eye on a Nikon D90 for a while now. I'm on a limited budget but could afford the D90. I may also take my trusty old Sony A230 in to a local shop and see if I can trade for a different lens.

What are your thoughts without the brand wars?

I'm pretty invested in the Minolta/Sony line due to the lenses I've got.....and I like their intuitive controls.

That being said, if I wasn't invested, I'd love the Nikon D90....my dad just recently got one and it blows me away! The metering is just brilliant and it takes fantastic photos.

I'd suggest comparing in a shop. One will feel better than the other. Nikon is backwards controlwize to Canon (and vice versa). Example: focus and zoom work in the opposite direction - Canon vs Nikon.

for me I liked the "feel" weight of the Nikon to the Canon...you will need to have them side by side to know which one you like...

What she said... Check them all out, and see which one feels best in your hands. All the current crop are capable of great images. The camera that feels best for weight, balane, and controls will be the one you can use without the camera getting in the way of your work. I went with Canon, but my hands are larger, and it just felt the most natural to me. Your experience may differ and there is nothing at all wrong with the Nikon offerings.

Well never mind now. My parents bought me a Nikon D5000. I read it has same sensor as d90 but lacks the auto focus motor built in but I'm not planning on starting my own photo business anytime soon. I see that Tamron and Sigma make lots of high quality lenses with motors built in at reasonable prices. Yay!

Make them a deal... put your money in with what they were planning to spend, and get a D300

I've played with a D90 and D5000 and love them both. I think that since I'm not a pro or trying to be one that maybe the D5000 may be better for me. I like the way it feels compared to my neighbors Canon. I may go ahead and buy the D5000 and that will leave me enough money to get a new laptop too.
