I own a 5D Mk 11 and also a 5D as my back up camera for weddings ect
and I was really considering thinking about trading my 5D and looking to
join the Super Heavyweights with a 1Ds Mk 111.
I dont really know if this camera will give me more than my 5D Mk 11 as
it has a battery Grip attached and produces excellent results.
My Question is do I trade my 5D and get another Mk 11 or can someone give
me a valid reason to establish why I should jump to the 1Ds instead of the
outstanding 5Dmk 11
advice please |

In my view, the main difference between the lines is fps. I'm not sure the rest you gain in the 1D line will shine in wedding/portrait photography. If you feel the 5D2 shoots too slowly and you are missing stuff, then get a 1D body.
That's just my opinion though and it's fairly uneducated to your specifics. |

The 1 series bodies and AF is miles ahead of your 5DMKII. The screen on the back isn't nearly as good though, that is the only downside to it. It won't shoot video either. If I could have afforded a 1DsMKIII I'd have bought one. Even my 7D's AF blows away the 5DMKII, sad when a prosumer body is crippled with AF coverage and ability like it is. The coverage and the accuracy and speed of the AF on the 5DMKII is abysmal to say the least. It's a good camera and it puts amazing files out, but when you have to shoot anything that moves much you better be ready for hit and miss.

It's probably a case of me not knowing what I'm missing. |

Doc sometime when you are out head into a camera store and see if they have a used or new 1DsMKII or 1DsMKIII. Put it in your hands bolt on one your lens. Look through and see the coverage and "feel" the difference in AF speed. It really will amaze you.
while the two coverage areas don't seem that different in real world usage having those extra AF points makes a difference. At least to me and my style. |

I was in the same boat as you a week ago. Keep my 5d as a back up and get the 5DII or 1DsIII. It really depends on your needs and cash flow. Image quality wise, It's very close. So don't expect to much to improve on output. Although the focusing system is vastly different.
This being the biggest advantage. Although, I have read about focus issues. Even the guys at Henry's Camera Store, said they had a few returned for fixing. So in my mind, if I'm paying $7000 for a body it better be perfect or darn close. Check google and you will find the posted problems. One plus is the battery. I believe it is rated for 1800 shots. Just keep in mind, a spare will run close to $300can. Plus it won't fit your 5DII body's. So put that in the equation too. Oh and the batter charger is huge. So make sure you have extra camera bag room. I would suggest waiting for photokina next month. You don't want to invest in a $7000 body and find out a better cam is available after the fact. So if you are not missing shots from focus issues, or need a bullet proof body, I'd keep what you have and get the 5DII. Or wait 6 months or so for the new 5DIII. The focusing system may be worth the wait!
Good Luck!
Oh and just a tip. I use 60mb/s CF cards with my 5DII. Compared to my 20mb/s cards, I get 3 more shots in burst, before the buffer is full. Very cool... So get some fast cards, if you have not already.
It may just get you the missed shot!
