My original thought was George W saying "nucular" instead of "nuclear," but having looked up the definition of misquote, I'm going to go with a quote that we all think someone said, when in fact they really didn't. In a way, this is another free study!! YIPPEE |

I think if you go with a mangled expression (which some might consider a misquote - A passage or remark quoted inaccurately) you open yourself up to DNMC.
Does mangling a quote/expression into a nonsensical statement equate to an inaccurate quote? I think opinions will vary greatly on that one. Typically a misquote is something that most people think was said due to its popularity and similarity to something that was said. The similarity is what usually leads to people believing/accepting the inaccuracy. |

For example: Find a great mosquito and represent it in a phonograph? |

If we see an LP on a stick being used as a fly swatter in the next challenge, we'll know who it came from. ;-) |

again, A LITTLE CLARIFICATION HERE PLEASE???!!
from what i understand, we will take a famous misquote (one that is already misquoted) and represent it in a photograph right??
and one more thing, are we still supposed to put the correct quotation in the title of the photo?? |

Misquote can be a noun or a verb. The primary definition of misquote is (v) "to quote incorrectly" or (n) "an incorrect quotation." A mangled quote is just fine for this challenge and should not be considered DNMC.
FYI, quotes that are attributed to the wrong person are not misquotes. A better definition for those would be misattributions.
holyground, the challenge definition asks us to "find" a misquote, so for some voters a famous misquote (i.e., one the voter is familiar with) might prompt a higher score, but hopefully most voters will be more lenient. As for adding the correct quotation to the title, I think that would make an overly long title! |

On the other hand, referring to that font of wisdom Wikiquotes, there is a whole section called "Commonly Misquoted" that lists famous persons to whom quotes are falsely attributed!
So, maybe we should just work on the assumption that most of those entering this Challenge are trying as hard as they can to meet the Challenge requirements with the information they have at hand.

It may not be such a great idea to use something that people think is correct but actually isn't... Sure, it makes you clever, but only because you're one of the few that know it's a misquote. The point is to meet the challenge in many others' eyes, so don't do something most people think is correct (like "Beam me up, Scotty!") or have never heard (like some obscure speech 100 years ago). Do something popular, like "We will not tire, we will not falter fart, and we will not fail."

I disagree. I think much of the point of this challenge is to show that many common quotes and catch phrases are not how we think they were. I expect to be looking many of them up as I vote, to learn what was really said. |

I know how crowded this challenge has been getting, but you will have to squeeze over and make room. I'm in with entry #23. |
