Hey everyone, I'm having issues with flash... I'm trying to learn and one of my old teachers is a professional photographer... I asked him about mixing flash with ambient light he said this "You basically take a ambient meter reading of the natural light and set your camera and flash to a stop or two faster than that. So if your natural ambient reading was 1/60 at f.8, you could set your camera and flash to manual and set them at 1/125 at f.8. or even 1/1250 at f.8 for a more dramatic look. ".... the only issue is that i'm using my camera's on camera pop up flash to trigger my SB-800 flash with the on camera flash dialed down to zero. He said I should set my flash up to 1/125th or 1/60th .. or whatever my meter reading is..... BUT.... on my SB-800 all I am able to control is the (mm)... it ranges from 24mm to 105mm... so I don't get how to set it up the way he is telling me to? any ideas?

Use your flash in manual mode (stop the e-TTL or wotever automatic mode)
Then you can control the power of your flash.

Keyz... If I stop the remote mode then I don't think I can fire the flash with the pop up flash on my camera? or can I? I don't know? I don't have another way to fire it... I can't afford remote triggers right now.

In your custom setting menu, go to bracketing flash. e3 is the setting for your built in flash, if you move to the right you can then set your in camera flash to commander mode. Once that is done you can arrow over again and set not only the power of your on camera flash but also that of your SB-800. it works like a charm. However there is another piece to this puzzle. With the flash on, press and hold the center SEL button. This will take you to another menu for the flash. You want the menu that is on the right with a lot of squiggly lines. It will say off, master, and so forth. I set mine to remote, or SU-4. Its been a while. Play with it and you will get it. I must say that adjusting flash output on the camera is so much easier than always going back to the flash. have fun.

Setting it to SU-4 mode places the flash in dumb slave mode, meaning it will trigger from any other flash, so this is not what you want if you intend to control the power (but remote mode is). Also, I'm not sure if I'm understanding your question, but if you're expecting to be able to adjust shutter speed on your flash you won't. It will be a measure of total flash power, like 1/2, 1/4, 1/32 etc...

What keyz is saying is just that you cannot adjust the power when using i-ttl because the camera chooses the power for you. However, when using i-ttl you can decrease flash power in a manner just like using your exposure compensation button.
As far as mixing flash with ambient... you'll have to describe a bit more what you're aiming to do. Settings for fill lighting will be different from crosslighting and various other lighting approaches and looks.

I use the SU-800 Commander and can control three flash heads at once, all from the command unit mounted on the camera. This is the ideal scenario.
