Is there a big difference between a Tiffen and Canon UV when using it on a Canon 24-105mm f4 lens? |

Probably not a large one... I actually don't know how good the Canon filters really are. Tiffen is pretty basic stuff.
Honestly, though, I'll tell you the same thing I tell everyone who asks about UV filters; unless you have to have protection from corrosive or abrasive materials, don't use them. Use the lens hood, and don't introduce more glass into the optical path. It can never do the image quality any good, and will certainly do some harm, though perhaps small. |

I agree with Kirbic, while I use one while near the ocean or at the beach for volleyball games. I don't recommend using them at all. Use a good hood and if in conditions where you need to protect the front element from salt, sand, or other elements toss one on, and I recommend using a good one.
One thing I have always done while looking for a good one is take a white cloth, lay it on the table, take the UV filter you are considering and set it on top of it. Compare the color of the kleenex under it to the other. You would be surprised at what colors you will find on cheap filters. |

I totally agree with krbic. I have done tests on my 70-200L f2.8 using a hoya super hmc uv filter. Surprisingly I could notice a small degradation of image quality. Enough to warrant not running the filter. So unless your in a dirty, or lens scratceable place don't bother.
B and H make some great filters using schnider optical glass. Pricey but apparently worth the quality investment. Tiffen/ Cannon wise, they will probably be similar, not bad... |
