What I am suggesting, is a way to regiter the difference between the last time the score was refreshed and the current score. And then, with this difference, you can calculate and register what were the latest votes.
Suppose I have 36 votes now with an average score of 5.0000. Then, after 5 minutes I have 38 votes with an average score of 4,9210. Doing the maths, I will conclude that in the last 5 minutes, I received a 3 and a 4.
My spreadsheet was able to do this automatically, grabbing all the information from the DPC front page. And each votes were registered to a line in the spreadsheet, stating the scores on each refresh.
Let me know if you have any doubts.

That's what mine does. Or rather it'll either calculate 3 and 4 or 2 and 5 or 1 and 6. It's random.

And if there was only one vote on that period? Then the maths will give you the exact value of that vote and that one should not be randomized when calculating the entire voting distribution.
Sometimes, you will know the exact values, sometimes not.

Ohh. So in the spreadsheet I put in something to say "exact" or "interpolated"?
07/19/2010 03:34:12 PM · #53
In my Excel spreadsheet, while it was refreshing the data from DPC site, it was able to detect if a vote count occurred and if so, it would register a new line with a guess of the new vote(s). What was already registered would not change anymore. Only updates would be then recorded to a new line of the spreadsheet.
This way, it was more accurate than random guess every time. Your program do a random guess of the entire vote distribution everytime you click on the stats button. What I am suggesting is to save what was already guessed because guessing only on each refresh is less likely to add variations to the entire distribution than guessing the entire distribution every time.

Updated the code. I think I fixed the bad parsing bug that some were experiencing, and it works for multiple challenges at the same time too, which is kinda neat. I don't know that it didn't before, but I know it does now.

In the future I'll have the option of hiding the command prompt window (I use it as a debug). When a new score is detected it now prints out something more useful.

I have been fairly busy with challenge entries and the day job so haven't implemented anything new on it. Just did some housekeeping on it really.

I just tried it again this morning, i can confirm that it now works for me.

i also just became a paying member, not sure if that was the culprit or not but it does work now.

Naw. It was a stupid bug on my part. I basically wasn't loading something from file that was really needed. Which lends to the curiosity of why it worked for some, eh? And I've no idea why that was.

Great that it works for ya, mike_311! You like it?

Edit: Again. I wrote it when I wasn't a paying member and it worked for me. I think it was the bug.

Mighty stuff. Let me know if you have a wish list of features.

Hey Nail,

Every time that I press generate stats on your program, I get a different chart. Something is fishy here.

Well, I give up. I thought this pic would do better. I guess I should have shot a picture with a bug in it.
Votes: 25
Views: 48
Avg Vote: 4.9600

How the program works is if there is more than one vote to fill in it generates these on the fly. If there's only one new vote it calculates this new vote. It can't guarantee that the correct votes are semi-intelligently randomly generated when more than one comes in (for example if you had 11 points to make up there are lots of ways it could have been constructed: 1,10 or 2,9 etc). But my program guarantees that the average will be correct over the range generated.

If you're using it mid-challenge you might have like 20 or so votes to make up. With random being random it's understandable for the changes every generate stats click. Leave it on for a while. You'll see only the oldest votes change.

Someone mentioned that they might want the votes to be static. I'll implement this as an option later on. Personally, I feel that only single new votes should be left static. As otherwise it might lend more confidence to the randomly generated votes than it should.

the best thing about it i can just hover the mouse over the icon on task bar and see my current score. Nice.

Now for a change request, how about you make it so that it will delete the low scores from the website ;)

Haha!
If you right click on the icon it gives you a refresh/update option that's going to go to the entry page too. I don't know if I documented that.

Cool prog.

You've still got a few interface issues, but this is looking very nice.
(note that your entry name area available is much shorter than max title length for DPC, etc.., not that these small bugs matter, it's just polish.)

Good work! Thanks for sharing this.

Hi folks.
I meant to share this with ye ages ago, but had to do some maintenance/updating/etc so delayed it.
The program's got the go-ahead by Langdon a couple of weeks back. Anyway, the program's better than ever, and more stable than ever.

If anyone wants to use it you must first uninstall everything that you had before! I mean it. The whole directory. This new update is not compatible with old ones.
To install there's now an easy-to-use installer here //dl.dropbox.com/u/826473/dpchallenge/dpChallengeMonitorInstaller.msi which you can just run, and it'll install it wherever you want it.
Again, in terms of screenshots:

Any questions can go on here or you can PM me.

Over/Under just started, so it might be nice to track your scoring on that!

This thing is indeed awesome.

There's even a secret feature that I'll tell you about if you PM me... :)

I wonder if perhaps this program is causing the site speed issues we're currently experiencing...?

If someone has their recheck speed too frequent.

Or if the program is still checking expired challenges (perhaps)? I know this is unlikely, but throwing it out there.

Haha. I doubt it. Unless about a million billion people are using it at the same time its traffic footprint is, at worst, significantly smaller* than simply pressing refresh on the home page once a minute. So if anything it should speed up the site.

It also doesn't refresh to get old entry statistics. It only checks for new ones.

* It doesn't load any javascript, css or any other scripting data like your browser does. It doesn't download the thumbnails of the previous winning entries, like your browser does. So it's about 1/4 the downloaded size. Meaning it's faster and smaller.

Great stuff!

Now, I'm sure error reports are welcome :). On Windows 7, the installer failed to create program group so I had to dig the exe out of the folder. No big deal. Another thing, once it connected to my account, the status page suddenly put itself to the bottom, behind all other windows. (I'm sorry I didn't have time to read the entire thread to check if this issue was already mentioned.) I'm not sure why this happened, could be caused by the restrictive windows policies on my company laptop, although my account is a local admin on the machine.

I started the program just a few hours before the voting is over, so the distribution is probably too optimistic - I'm sure I got plenty more 1s :).

As for the traffic footprint, I'm sure this program creates much less load on the server than all the anxious contestants clicking refresh each minute (myself included :).

Just submitted my first photo and was trying to install this program. I had the same problem that someone else was having - program runs, but only see 2 tabs (Proxy Setting, Other Options). No info about my submitted photo. Any ideas on what I need to do to fix. I stopped and restarted the program and then uninstalled, redownloaded, and installed with same problem. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I think it will only work if you are a full member (like the update button). As a registered user only, you wouldn't get access to anything more than the hourly update? Maybe that's it.
10/15/2010 08:52:58 AM · #74
It just popped up this morning - I am still not a member - I am guessing that since I am not a member and only get hourly updates I had to wait the hour until my next update for it to receive any information........ will become a member once I feel I have any chance at all in the advanced editing challenges......

I've been a registered user for a couple of years.. I hardly entered any challenges. Since recently becoming a full member (really only so I could vote on more challenges) I've been entering a lot more too. I know I don't have a chance against others in the advanced challenges, but I can still compete against myself! I figure the more I enter the more I learn.
