Amazing what passes for acceptable copy these days...

Two of my favorites:
Outhouses are typically glamorous or something to be hurried through, but that was certainly the case Monday when they raced in the San Juan County Fair.

"There's no place else in the Four Corners that are holding one," Roberts said. "I think this is the best year we've had."

I particularly like this more subtle yet equally egregious error:

Organizer Tom Roberts said it was the biggest outhouse race the fair had ever seen.

I wasn't aware that fairs had eyes...

I dunno, this seemed okay to me. You could reasonably argue that it's an acceptable example of metonymy, or even synecdoche or personification.

"Ford's new SUV has the most powerful engine the world has ever seen." -- no problem there.

Regardless of that, the word "had" just feel wrong there... I would have preferred-
Organizer Tom Roberts said it was the biggest outhouse race the fair has ever seen.

... and I'm sure we can all agree that the first sentence in the article, which you quote in your original post, is a whopper of nonsense and poor construction.

Isn't it though? :)

Really quite spectacular...

"Ten outhouses and 13 teams competed through a winding track filled with obstacles, wheeling their way through a course while the outhouses were occupied."

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, I'm still struggling to work out the math involved above.
(I'll pass on the visuals.)

Here's one from a case I worked on a while back:

"In a scheme of fraud, the Individual Defendants and each of them, did personally participate in a scheme of fraud aimed at the Christopher Enterprize."
