Not many people probably would notice this but I think 1-Either population somewhat controlled ( Art Roflmao, I don't mean SCs handing out condoms... just in case if you get wise with me) and not a huge crowd here like it was 2-There are lots of people but not active as they were.

I remember the days (between 2006 and 2008), threads were getting rolled much higher rate, meaning people did answer to the posts quicker. Some of the well known posts are even pretty much slowed down.

Why is this important to me? Well, I remember I also did complain about HUGE entries per challenge and we honestly were wondering what the heck would happen if there is 700 entry per challenge (more often) soon. Voting was not high enough, people were getting really worry about the high entry & low voting.

Somehow, it is controlled, or people just got bored or they went to other places, who knows. I am just happy the way it is right now. It seems like "just right" for my taste.

To the old timers here... are you guys agree with me about this? Did you also sense the drop and probably happy about it a little :-\

I feel I joined dpc at its prime, 2006. Recently entries have dropped quite a bit. I remember when 200-300 entries seemed par for the course.

I'm clearly a newer member, but I do quite like the challenges at the levels they are currently at, and I found the DPL challenges felt just a little too big for me... Then again, in a couple of years, I'm sure I might welcome larger, more difficult, challenges.

I like the smaller challenges, they feel so much more manageable. I know this is MY problem, but I don't even like looking at the really huge ones.

So yes, lower numbers are great, but in the forums I like to have action. I like the serious discussions as well as the chit chat and the silliness.

I've been here for so long, I've seen plenty of ups and downs, and I try to make the most of whatever we're up to at any given phase. I still love our DPC, warts and all :-)

So are you saying there should be a cap on the number of entrants to a competition? Interesting.
I voted in like 60 to 70% of the free study. I just didn't really have the time to commit to voting on it all. I'm not saying I couldn't have. But I just didn't.
I didn't vote on the winning entry. Which I thought was a shame.

Well, I have been here a while and I too have noticed a drop in participation in both the forums and entries. However the open contests with virtually all ps mods allowed there is still a lot of entries. Probably all there needs to be. With 3-400 entries it is very time consuming to give them a fair look and comment on 10-20 %. I'm looking for the challenge with 3 entries with me being one of them.
As far as Art Roflmao, I think he is cool and adds to the family. I probably didn't understand your comment. There are several very popular forumites, all of which add to the joy of spending time here enjoying their different views, mostly liberal I might add but never the less, they need a place to put their warped ideas. :}
SC has a difficult task and they handle it well. Given the sets of rules the interpret it's a wonder they are as good as they are. I certainly don't believe they show favorites and allow any one or group to control the site. They seem to treat everyone the same, except me. None of em like me, but not without good reason.

LOL! David, that's the funniest post I've ever read from you, I think! :-)

Oh, and I think that we're almost to the point of going back to a single open challenge, especially when there really isn't much difference between the two in either subject matter or ruleset.

Which time frame?

Its summer now (northern). Could participation be down simply because of that?

I actually joined in 2005 but remained unactive for quite awhile....2 tours to Iraq helped with that. I have now gotten quite involved...I like this site very much.

Yes, once you become part of the DPC community, it's fun to stick around.

When I found the place late in 2003, it was fairly new with a smallish, but still world-wide, community and lots of gentle advice and critiquing went on. Most of us were still on the low end of the digital learning curve and figuring out things together.

Then, a national photography magazine found and mentioned the site as "the best" and the doors opened wide. Membership built on that and DPC became larger with lots more opinions and ideas on offer.

It'll be interesting to see what happens next in the life of DPC.

Whether there are 1000 entries, or 50 entries, it doesnt bother me (though voting on 1000 entries is tough).

I do, however, really like positive threads like this one. Its nice, and reassuring, to know that people still enjoy this place. I dont know where my photography would be without DPC.

Photography? I thought this was a bitch and moan site.

I came here exactly two years ago today.(So if things have gone downhill since then it must be my fault.) I love this site and I think the challenges are good to vote on and appreciate without there being too many entries. I sometimes chicken out of voting on large challenges, mainly because I run out of download capacity before any month is over and it takes like a minute per photo to load and that makes voting take ages.
