For example, an Avedon challenge could link to The Richard Avedon Foundation.
I don't see how it could do anything but benefit the site as a whole to systematically expose our members to the work of acknowledged Masters in the field.
I'd like to propose a slight twist on this idea, though:
Wouldn't it be wonderful if we started a new category of challenges, for members, called "Master Challenge"? This challenge would be held monthly, and we'd have one month to make our entries, just like a Free Study. Free studies are posted for voting on the first day of each month, so let the Masters be posted on the 15th of each month. Encourage the creation of in-depth threads discussing the work of the selected Master during the submission period. Let people talk about why they think the photographer is great, or not-so-great for that matter. Maybe even have a new forum section for "Masters" where we can discuss great/influential figures of the photography world.
How exciting this would be!

Yes. This would be fantastic. |
Sounds great to me! I especially like the recurring aspect. I think that could serve as a compromise to those who want a stricter focus on in-camera technique and those who don't mind having more creative freedom. If you just run these once in a blue moon you can't appease both groups. |

OK, the "powers-that-be" have taken notice of this thread, and are considering possible variations on some of the excellent ideas which have been suggested so far.
However, I personally think we need to scrap the psychologically-loaded (and previously used at DPC) term "master" for good, and I am lobbying to call any further versions of this type of challenge
In The Style Of ...
I suggest that, rather than continuing to promote the idea, you all help with the research by finding additional links to any galleries or articles on any photographers you've suggested. |

Cool. Maybe everyone who has suggested a photographer with those links. Thanks! |

My original post was updated to reflect the research links. Basically, I included their official web sites and their wikipedia entries.

Sorry to drag up an old thread but I couldn't figure out whether or not there had been a Henri Cartier-Bresson challenge or not.
If not - why?? |

Nope, nor were any of the other 30 or so suggestions that were made in this thread. The thread went three pages but I guess that's just not enough interest to run even one of these.

I'm (as we speak!) writing a photo essay on a Cartier-Bresson shot of Alberto Giacometti for a University final exam on monday. I'm completely in the zone for a master's challenge right now! Honestly, having read through this thread it's a massive shame this never came to anything - the useful lessons people on this site could learn from a project like this would be invaluable. Having spent a lot of time going through various master's works and analysis recently my perspective has really changed on where I'm going to be taking my work in future. This site is great - but it's getting to the point where nothing really speak to me or moves me any more - I feel that an injection of old school back to basics would really shake things up a bit and help people to get a fuller and more healthy perspective on photography.
Having said that I did discover nixter the other day. Wow. He only has one ribbon, enough said. |

Since this fabulous challenge suggestion was raised again in the thread below, thought I'd take the opportunity to bump it. After all, it is about to reach it's 1st birthday.

Be wonderful if they listened and followed through, wouldn't it? It would be easy to implement and wildly educational as well :-)

Oh, how young and naive i was back then with only a handful of DPC membership days beneath my belt. Was never going to happen was it! Still, plenty of more suitable suggestions in this thread.
Neverthless, here are my favourite photographers at the moment...
Roger Ballen - I imagine his fantastic combination of documentary photography and psychological and pathological still life portraiture would be incredibly hard to replicate in anything other than a purely superficial way though so it may be best not to try.
Keith Carter and his ethereal imagery filled with influences from folklore and literature and dreams would be a fun challenge though.

Thanks for an excellent example of why I've pretty much given up on suggesting challenges. There are just too many Stock Photography challenges to get through, and lens cap challenges. |

This would be most excellent!!!! Let's go with Keith Carter as Clive has suggested to begin with.
Have a look at the link and add your voice in this thread. Surely we can build a critical mass. Look at the uptake for 'The Operator' - we need something like this. |

We could always start a year long side challenge. One photog a month (or something like that) - not posting everyday, maybe once a week. If there isn't enough interest for a real challenge, then nothing stopping those of us who are interested. Any takers? |

I'm trying to bump the SC discussion. Please keep posting suggested photographers, and links to representative works as a resource for those not familiar.
Personally, I think it should be a month-long challenge run every two or three months -- that means we need 4-6 new photographers to emulate every year, so the more we have ready-to-go the easier it will be to get it "approved" and set up. |
