My step daughter is getting married today and luckily she hired a real photographer. But when I met him at the rehearsal last night he asked if I would help with the pics. He wants help while he is taking pics of either the guys or girls getting ready and that I do the other group. I guess now that I think about it he isn't a pro but this a hobby. Ok, now I'm rambling. Anyway, what I need help with is which of sad little lenses would you recommend? I don't have a big selection: Sony SAL-1855 DT 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6, Tamron AF 28-80mm f/3.5-5.6 Aspherical or the Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO DG Macro? Please help!!! I can't think of a better group of people to answer this question

Is renting an option? A hundred dollars will get you a lens that should make easy work of this... In essence all of your lenses are pretty darn slow.

If I hired a carpenter to fix my house, a mechanic to fix my car, or a doctor to fix a broken bone and they asked me to help them do it.......I'd go hire a different one.

But that is a different story. You will need plenty of light and stopped down on your widest lens for the group shots. A good rule of thumb is for every person in the shot you get an F stop. Meaning 2 in the group F2.8, three F3.5, four F4, five, f5.6, and so on. So to get those fstops and shutter speeds high enough to get them you need either to go up with the ISO or put a lot of light, real or strobes on them to light them.

Well the photographer ended up taking care of all the pics he needed to do, but left early during the reception and the family was kind of upset over it since there were several more photos they wanted done. He was gone for the cake thing, when they left to go on honeymoon and family stuff. Guess he won't be used anymore by us. Wish I knew enough to take up this business myself, but I have a ways to go before I'm comfortable with that.

Did the family pay him for a set amount of time? Or did he just get bored and leave? If he was contracted to cover all the parts you mentioned then maybe you can approach him for a refund of sorts - if however he was contracted for 4,6 or 8 hours and he left after the alloted time then I can`t see what the issue is.
Regarding the family shots - the biggest issue I have is that I can be given a list of 20 - 30 shots a week before the wedding, then the B&G get bored as they cant understand why they take over an hour - even with the best assistant and best man/ushers group shots can be hellish - kind of like herding cats - people wander off - you always get the `joker` in the pack, people rather be off drinking than standing around and paying the courtesy of having their photos taken as requested by the B&G.
