I know this is crude for my first real attempt but give me your thoughts
I shot this with the new Tokina 80-400mm and the 2x converter.
Question:
I had a very thin green ring around the south/east portion of the moon. In oder to get rid of it I converted to B&W?
Is this normal or is it an effect from the lens? There were thin cloud layers floating by all the time also.
Data:
1/125s
400mm (+2x)=800mm
200iso
f11
It was underexposed but I was able to bring it out with simple adjustments.
I layered 12 images in Photoshop
Mild USM
and Mild Shadow/Highlight
I will admit here and now I learned the new tripod is going back :)
At 800mm it is impossible to adjust! I did better with my $30.00 walmart tripod :)
The 3 knob adjustment was great for standard shooting but for detail it is terrible. Lesson learned.

Ok here goes...
I have the tokina 80-400mm also with a 2x TC, and I really have not been able to get sharp pictures with that combo, they come out really weird, but the Tokina by its self at 400mm does a good job with little procesing needed on a single mage.
Moon with Tokina 80-400mm @ 400mm
I do get the green ring also, not sure if its the lens onr clouds, since i get it with the lens or the telescope, but not all the time.
Im not sure on the steps you did to stack the images with photo shop, but it looks a little over processed on the USM or something, I dont know photoshop very well so I cant give any pointers.
Do you have any shots with out using the Tokina and the 2x TC?
try this little program for stacking and processing.... it works well and its free. it only takes a few trys to get the hang of it.
Registax
if you want you can email me a few of the images you have so I can look at the originals.

Real quickly, we are heading for San Antonio and Austin this weekend to visit our sons.
I merely duplicated the layer 12 times in PS, flattened the layers, and the did a USM.
It is crude but I only got a few that were even worth trying to save . They was to much play in this new tripod with the heavy camera and lens.
I plan on returning the tripod and looking at another model/make.
It is great for simple photography but not macros or 800mm moon shots.
I will further test the lens this weekend and see if I will be returning it also :(
I have to go Penny is hollering :) LOL
Have a good weekend all

I think I found the problem..you can not duplicate the same layer, you must use seperate images to stack to make 1 image. So instead of duplicating the same layer 12 times, you need 12 seperate exposures.
Im going to process a few images I took back in January with the 80-400 with the 2x TC and post them, then I will process the same number of images with out the TC and just the Tokina @ 400mm.
