We've reached a point where I need to buy a second tripod for my wife, Cowtownmom. The primary requirement is it must be small and easy to transport. Of course something stable as well. I already have a ballhead to use on it so I only need the legs. I have been pretty happy with my modded Manfrotto 785b (since my modifications to it). I can buy another 785b for about $70, but was looking for other suggestions. Looking to keep it to about $100 or so.

I was looking at this one on Adorama. It looks a little bigger than the 785B, but still fairly small and easily toted.

Thanks

I'm on my 4th one this year because they keep getting blown away by the wind. Balsa wood isn't a good material for tripods. ;)

I'm looking for a carbon fibre one for lightness. This one is just out of my price range at 185 (waiting for a promo price) I'm looking for one under 150 but it absolutely needs to be very light. Good luck and post here when you find one please.

I splurged and replaced my crippled-up Giotto with a Manfrotto 055XB (basically an updated version of Ryan's tripod) and ball head. Lightweight, removable centre post (that was the first thing I did, take it out!), very sturdy and strong. Managed to swing a bit of a deal at the camera store, was still some $$$ but very well worth it.

Thanks. I was just looking over the current manfrotto range and that one stood out to me. I'm not sure if I want to go extra for a model with the rotating center column or not. Might not be able to keep this purchase to the planned amount.

Looking at the Benro A-198EX now. Has a rotating center column like some of the Manfrottos, and is under $150. If my local camera shop has it, I have a $25 off coupon for doing an online survey from them.

I just picked up a SLIK 210 (tilt/pan head), complete with quick-release adapter, for $15 at the thrift store.

some add'l info

eta: compare benro to manfrotto gear. I think benro is targeting manfrotto directly, and you may find equivalent units at lower prices, or superior units for the same....

Yes, Snaffles is rite. The 055xb is a great set of legs. It also goes extremely low, when the centre column is removed. Also goes very tall, for us over six feet people. Mine has lasted me 10+ years and still going strong. Nothing but praise, for these great legs!
If you can swing it, a great investment.

I went by the local shop and they had the Benro A-198EX. With my $25 coupon it was only $117 +tax. Seems like a lesser priced version of some of the Gitzo or Manfrotto models. Construction seems good but not pro level nuclear hardened. Has a lot of nice features, including a tilting center column. Should do well.
